Best ways to build backlinks?

I had my website portlandsauto.com for almost a year now and it seems like i dont have enough backlinks. I spent some time adding my site to the link directories but it doesnt seem to work.

Which is the best way to get the backlinks?

Submit to the main directories that are publicly known. It is a given fact that it is WORTH submitting some directories, and some not. Just like DMOZ, if you are listed, you are considered as lucky. It all depends.

No i havent been doing any forum postings, etc.. I consider it spamming, but i guess i will have to try something.

I have good luck with directory links, but use that in conjunction with other linking strategies. If you can find a few blogs other people run who will allow you to post on their blog and link to your site, that can really help. Also, having a solid game plan regarding keyword(s) is a must. I typically work on one keyword phrase at a time per site, and use the same keyword phrase in all of my anchor text. If you are building lots of links with random anchor text, it will not be as effective as if you have a gameplan.
