It clear that one of the means Google uses to determine what a site is about is from the anchor text attached to inbound links. I am interested to read what everyone's view are on using different anchor text on inbound links.
The reason is that I have lots of webpages on my websites with different keyword themes on them.

    Question 1 -
Is getting an inbound link to a subpage more valueable to the subpage than getting an inbound link to the homepage?

    Question 2 -
Does using different versions of anchor text actually help google understand you cover a broad range of keywords without diluting the value google would apply if you used the same anchor text?

well, always use the anchor text with inbound links and if your sub page does contain that anchor text in the contents then you must get the link on that sub page instead of home page.

It's a good idea to vary your anchor text - it looks more like a natural pattern of gaining links. If you're doing a serious high-volume link-building campaign that means you get a load of backlinks with exactly the same anchor text, google may consider that you're making efforts to 'manipulate' results.

I absolutely agree with all above ideas.
Variants of anchor text are the most important. It means that spinning the articles but the contents need to be preserved, and build quality backlinks. Google will consider that whether it looks natural.
Definitely, getting an inbound link to the homepage? It has big advantages. Especially, an inbound link will link to your relevant pages.

You can combine natural internal linking to your subpage which then links out to your site conservatively.

Making sure to mix up anchor text is essential, having all of your anchor text the exact same from all your links wont be the best approach.

Inbound Links are very important and helpful to boost ranking and get good Page Rank. When Anchor Tag is very useful and important to show basic information about link to visitor, before clicking on link. also targeted anchor tag helps more to boost SE Ranking.

Link to home page and inner page (sub pages) both are useful. But be careful that both link should not be form same anchor tag, try to use different anchor tag or keywords for both home page and sub pages link.
