I have posted this question on another seo board and didn't get much help, so i apologize in advance to the people who have already seen this question.

I have a client site... http://www.oppenheimer.com/ when you google cache the homepage it shows a cache of a different site! Also when you put the URL in google it does not show up, the url//news shows up but not the main site.

does this meen this site has a google penalty? it still shows page rank...

this is a redesigned site, but the site before this was live for well over a year.
The new version of their site has been live for a month + so it should be indexed properly by now, the rest of its pages are.

yahoo cache is a proper cache of the current site... im lost.

if you put in the site:http://www.oppenheimer.com/ in google the title is OWD law firm, which is not the title of the page. however when you click the link it brings you to the right page with the right title.

I don't believe there is a penalty in order. I'm not even able to bring the cache up, Google states that the query looks like a bot attack and that they can't complete the request.

Looks like this is something Google is fixing, I'd wait it out. I'd keep on with your SEO campaign on it and ignore this issue.

Alternatively you might consider validating the layout:
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=h...(detect+automatically)&doctype=Inline&group=0

thats interesting that you couldn't get the cache to show up, i just looked at it now... same problem. We developed their site and just had it go live about a month ago or so. We have not started the SEO process, however i wanted to see if i could find a solution to the caching before we get the "go" to start optimizing.

this problem has been on going atleast a month, probably closer to 2 months. I remember having the same cache for the old site before we even had the new site go live. Its gotta be something with the URL...

i see the cache of www owdlaw com/ if i view cache with google toolbar.

Did they have an .htaccess redirect at one time from the current domain to the old one, and has the redirect been updated yet to the current new domain with a 301 redirect.

Wow, that's certainly strange! I have no idea, but your best bet is to contact google and ask them about it. Something is screwy there.

What's also strange is that brian gardner designed the other site and it says (sic) Desing by Brian_Gardner. :D

*UPDATE* I was informed that oppenheimer did indeed own the URL owdlaw.com 5 years ago. They bought their new domain and built their new site, no redirects from the old domain to the new domain, they just let the old domain name expire. Obviously someone else purchased the domain and this is what we see in the cache now.

we are looking into the xml sitemap, we just have to figure out how to create an auto generating site map for new dynamic pages that are probably going to be added by the client.

even more strange, when you check the backlinks to both site in google they look the same.
Both sites have the same google PR. Both sites are on different servers.

    Possibly a case of 301 or 302 hijacking ?
    (see http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/columns/executive_tech/article.php/3564266 )
(not the wisest of things for them to try with a law firm ;) if that is the cause of your problem)
also see http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/bacon-polenta/ there is the url of a form you can notify google with if you think it may be a 302 problem etc.

If that is the case would the html canonical URL tag help ??? i don't know myself but someone else might.
    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html

If you do manage to sort it out please let us know the cause/fix.

By the way you do not have the non www redirected to the www by the way. Also there is no 404 page or robots.txt

It might also be wroth tracking down some of the old links to the old url (i see there are still several listed in googles backlinks) and getting them changed to the new url.

Just use info: to check google and PR from other too
it shows all information from some other domain
it happens to some parked domains
so after you really act your domain
usually you may have to wait for next PR update you will see different info:

thanks for the advice. We are aware of the 404's robots etc. We have yet to start the seo process, just in preliminary discussions. I will keep you guys informed when we find out the problem.
