    Hii....

i am looking to buy a new portable HDD to take backup of all my data
    500GB
i want to knw which brand is best
    seagate or WD

    http://freeagent.seagate.com/en-us/hard-drive/portable-hard-drive/Free-Agent.html

    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=525

in terms of style I prefer Western Digital  also its very small and fits in shirt pocket..

but seagate offers 5 years warranty and WD 3 years..

But seagate bit costly too... I want to know is the excess of 2 years in warranty really matters ??? ....

please guide me to a brand ... (seagate / WD )

    thanks :)

It doesn't really matter. 500GB is a pretty common size these days, and most companies (especially WD and Seagate) know what they're doing. I reckon you can safely buy on style/design.

But... personally, I've been a loyal Seagate customer ever since "the great WD data loss of 1997" when I lost a crap load of work, and learnt the importance of making daily backups. I've got a few 10GB Seagates from the mid 90s that are still going strong in an ancient (and abused) P3 box. I've got a WD in my current desktop that I use as a third gen backup, but for everything else, it's gotta be a Seagate.

I know it's irrational, but that's the way it is :)

It's totally up to you. Design is a personal thing...

The Seagate DOES have ventilation/speed holes though. :)

From my experience using seagate, it is worst & terrible. the components is not last long. i've think once to switch to maxtor, but maxtor now is under seagate, so i reject maxtor also.

then i've compare the WD & Buffalo.
WD is quite heavy and made from china
Buffalo has a shock resistance chassis, has a wire strap, and light...
now im using buffalo. and one more thing, buffalo is made from japan. the technology country.

    just my 2 cents

    Thanks for the reply ...

but Buffalo is not at all famous in my region.... also its not available too.........

and eventhough if I take it , I will have to move miles to find a service center of it ...

in my region , seagate , transcend , WD are popular...

I think you must go on with seagate or WD. :)
You can see some good deals on ebay too if the product is not available in your region :p

Anyhow, good luck with the purchase, think well before you get one.
