No need for Sitemaps? I didn't see any big/authorative sites have one

I think Google can crawl any site very well and quick. So what is the real need for Sitemaps? I checked big sites, like DP, Yahoo, ESPN, there is no site map on their sites.. And I believe it will be very difficult for them to make one as well... So what is the real need or benefit of Sitemaps?

 

sitemap is not mandatory thing but its easy for search engine to crawl pages if they find sitemap page in website.

 

We wouldn't know if those big sites submit their sitemap or feed into google webmasters tool.

 

Sure digitalpoint has a sitemap in google... infact so does Yahoo and ESPN so I'm unsure what you're talking about.

The biggest reason to use Google Sitemaps? That's simple. The google smap links under phrases (generally your domain name etc).

Go google "digitalpoint" or "yahoo" or "espn" you'll notice sublinks under the #1 serp result (which is generally the brand you entered). Those are only created off google sitemaps (notice the oi=smap in the href).

Just because you USE sitemaps does not mean you will get those included though, but they definitly won't be without them from my experience.

As for the difficulty, well, there is none. A simple script can do it automatically. Throw it on crontab and you have it auto-updating as often as you desire.

 

I have sitemaps without Sitemaps, so bterill, I dont think it is necessary. As Yahoo DP sitemaps, you guys have a link? My concern is that even for a site with PR7, Google might have issues crawling all pages, say (500,000).. Is that right?

 

using sitemap help[s you a lot i can't get crawled and indexed fine without sitemap everysite use sitemap and DP uses it too but nobody will use for example domain.com/sitemap for example i use www.4critics.com/sitemap_1.xml.gz

everyone have their name of sitemap so i think without a sitemap you can't be nowhere !

The sitemap links in the SERP's have nothing to do with the sitemaps that you submit to Google.

 

if you have backlinks pointing to almost every page of you sites just like big sites do, then you'll do fine with no need to assist spiders.

If you can't do that, then sitemap is needed.

 

Thanks for this answer however If you pay close attention to navigation within your site then sitemap is not required and your pages will get indexed.
