Why do a lot of people here care about PR?

I know in the past PR played a big role for the site's rankings. But I know it's not the case any more...

But here and there in this forum people talk about how to get high PRs, when will be the next pr updates etc...unless you are thinking about selling the site, or want to "give" links TO other sites which you maybe have FROM the site, there is no reason to care about PR, am I not right?
Then why do a lot of people care? Correct me if I'm wrong about my understanding here...

Well, personally I am caring about this because having good PR you can sell links from your website
    for a good price.

    Well said...

The main reason to worry about PR now days is if you are selling links in which case the person must not worry too about the fact that their site may be rendered totally worthless, at least at Google, and stripped of all PR if Google catches them.

that's one thing when you get a high PR, you can sell it for a good price but personally I used to focus on a lot of traffic for my sites. then PR is my least priority.

yeh Pr is not that important. Only if you plan on flipping website or like others said to sell links.

I was thinking, in order to improve your PR, you need backlinks. And backlinks are important to rank better. That is why some people including me think a higher PR might be not bad to achieve better rankings. Hope this makes sense to you.

Most important for me is website traffic. There is no point to have high PR and little visitors. Its not hard to get higher pagerank if you buying links.

I believe in the old saying, "Follow the money trail." When Google stops devoting time, money, algorithms, and engineers to PR, then and then only will I join the DP crowd that incessantly chants, "PR is useless!"

I don't know what is it with people saying "PR is useless". The best way to describe this is "PR is inaccurate sometimes". PR is definitely not useless. Do you think google will bother with handing down PR penalties if this was not important at all?

PR is something like reputation for the website/blog. It doesnt mean you will only care when you sell link or sell website. Better reputation will get better respect. That's why google pay alot of manpower and investment on PR

I fail to understand why did google start this PR business, in the first place?

What benefit do they derive or any website for that matter, from this rankings; apart from people making it a benchmark to sell links or site itself.

Don't you think in the absence of PR, webmasters would have concentrated more on serps and traffic?

    Regards,

I think I have the doublethink attitude to PageRank that a lot of people have -
When it comes to my sites, I don't give PR a second thought, don't know what PR they have, never look. I concentrate on their position in serps, the number of visitors, their conversion rate, and ROI.
But when I want links - I want links from sites with a high PageRank

Simply, PR is to value a site's worth.

If it is high, they can sell it for more money.

to answer your question - ( and i hope that it has not been answered to your satisfaction already) its simply a case of "little things for little minds"
Page rank used to be carved in stone
It was most important and in between page ranks you sat waiting
It is a marker I agree which shows some work or results and something for a person to hang his hat on
However you are dealing with technicians , with limited skills and understanding of the concepts, rather than more experienced staff
Interestingly I have come across a number of examples that proved to me that page rank is not such a big factor or deal
These examples centered around sites where i worked a set of keywords and had good rankings in the major search terms for those specifics
The page rank disappeared ( perhaps a competitor turned the site in to Google)
The SERPS have stayed , if not gotten better overall
I have a second example that proves the point anymore
You are right that page rank , is one factor to note , but it does not tell the total story in any manner or form.

    :):D
