Dedicated server

I got a shared hosting deal but I decided I want a dedicated server due to it being my own for my website and less hacks and issues since it will be shared with no one else as well.

I am wondering though... who do you think has the best deal for a new site that can grow large? And is getting it managed the best way since I know very little on that end?

Also are there ppl out there who would be interested in either partnering up as a server admin. or being hired for peanuts to help with server issues as they arise... for the foreseeable future?

I'd like to do it all my own but have the smarts to know that I can't do everything:cool:

go managed and you wont regret it. You can sleep asound knowing your server is taking care of and monitored.

I will suggest you to go for an unmanaged budget dedicated server, they cost anywhere between $70-$140. So it would be a smart choice for you to go for a budget server when you are concerned about security also I must say vps are bad as they are oversold these days. You can get freelance admins to manage your server for $40-$50/Month

Dedicated server = Full control on your server

Freelance admins for $40-$50/mos. This sounds good. I think serverpronto, or something like that offers the cheap, dedicated plan.

I suppose I could find freelance admins on Elance?

    Thank you for the information:cool:

TP, you need to add management.

I would suggest going with a fully mananged server, from a company.

Without knowing more about your business,

    An Atom
    2 gig ram, 1 x 250 might be a good start

check http://www.webhostingtalk.com , they have an offer section and wiredtree runs some decent promotion on their dedicated server or vps and hybrid server. Plus, if you are looking for review about http://www.wiredtree.com search webhostingtalk.com and you will find plenty of positive review of satisfied customers, including myself.

    Another vote for platinumservermanagement.

We can do some pretty good deals on servers if you contact me directly (PM), all of the equipment we run is owned by us and housed in the NJ Switch & Data datacenter.

I have just switched from a dedicated server to a virtual private server on a cloud at http://www.vps.net and have been very impressed.

The main concern I had with my single dedicated server was hardware failure or data corruption. It had become very difficult to back up my server onto my desktop because of the file sizes, and to get a second server to back up to (or to use my hosts backup solution) would have added about $40 to the cost of my dedicated server.

So I started looking around and found vps.net, and read up on cloud computing. It's a bunch of servers tied together. You basically get a slice of it to put your 'virutal server' on.

The advantage is protection from hardware failure. If something goes wrong on the server your vps is on, your virtual server just rolls over and boots back up on another one.

And for data protection, it just costs $5 additional per month for daily, weekly and monthly backups. I used the backups several times while I was setting my server up, trying out different configurations and software, and if I didn't like it, just reverted back to the previous image. It was easy and quick.

The could is 'new', so I would still suggest keeping all your vital data, sites and such, backup'd at home too, but so far this system is looking great.

You also asked about growing. With a regular dedicated server, that means switching out hardware, often paying for the host to do that, and then paying a monthly fee forever.

With this vps, I can 'add nodes', which scales up cpu, memory, and space, as I grow, without having to switch out hardware, having that downtime, and being worried that something will go wrong and everything will have to be rebuilt.

Then, if things slow down, I can scale back down.

They are also setting up a system where things can be scaled up and down automatically, so if traffic jumps way up (like you got dug), the system will add cpu and memory and keep your site up, then scale back down when traffic drops down.

vps.net is new, so some things are still 'in the works' (like the automatic scaling), but my experience with both server and customer service has been very good.

I rarely get excited about a new service like this, but switching my server over to them has been fun and I think it's a really neat idea they have.

If you want to start with a small dedicated server and be able to grow, I can't think of any better way than this.

I would suggest getting a VPS instead of Dedicated box.

Its cheaper and you get all benefits of Dedicated server like full root access etc

I think you might ought to start out with a VPS. I personally have an unmanaged one at fsckvps and I think it is great! If your site currently works with just shared hosting, a VPS should be more than enough for quite a while. Plus they can scale up rather easy by just upgrading your package. They are not too hard to manage either, but that just might be because I have used Linux a lot and also use it on my desktops.
