Hi , Please help me decide today have to finalise today between cloud or dedicated. Its for a high trafficed online videos streaming site ( business videos) Adhysteria.com - video classifieds. The video are converted to flv and streamed on the site also all videos are stored on server. Need t shift the server an decide soon. Please suggest between dedicated or cloud host like gogrid, mediatemple, mosso etc. Rajiv
Personally I would say a dedicated server should be fine and cheaper for you. Never really seen the need for cloud hosting as you can get better deals on dedicated and set them up similar.
if you need more then one dedicated for a single site things get complicated and messy. Sometimes cloud computing is the easy way to scale up.
Cloud hosting isn't that great of a deal, and you only have so much control. For your needs, since it's high bandwidth... I would just go buy a dedicated server from 10TB.com where it's backed by imo one of the best network's in the WORLD(Softlayer's). -Jacob
Cloud is new, and is expensive. You could continue with dedicated untill cloud becomes cheaper than dedicated and proves to be trouble free.
Without knowing your exact setup and requirements. I'd also agree that a dedicated server would end up being more cost effective. I would only go with a cloud solution if your load is highly unpredictable and you need to scale up to meet demand. You could do this quite easily with a cloud solution. When that demand has subsided you can scale down. If it's not too late, you might also want to take a look at a hybrid cloud/dedicated solution. GoGrid has a pretty good hybrid solution. -Erik
You could host your site and everything on some cloud platform then offload your flv storage and encoding to a dedicated server. Best of both worlds
not really. One cloud instance on Amazon is at the same price or cheaper then a dedicated. There are more such examples on other platforms.
Well wouldn't there be some type of advantage like cheaper bandwidth/encoding if your on an umetered server or something? Plus you know the 2 things that grow most on a video site (bandwidth and encoding) will have a fixed price so you dont have to pay huge overages once your site grows plus you know the site its self won't be hindered by increased encoding. Heres a calculator for encoding.com (hosted on ec2) http://www.encoding.com/pricing/
Dedicated hosting with a Content Delivery Network to increase the efficiency of your streaming videos. I'll second the vote for SoftLayer.
I would say scale up from virtual private servers->dedicated servers->cloud servers based on your need and resource consumption.
All this depends on the situation and requirements but there are some advantages and disadvantages of the Dedicated and cloud servers, as the cloud technology is not mature enough but cost little than the dedicated. On the other side the Dedicated server cost more but reliable and handle good traffic with security. SO I think that you should go for the Dedicated server as this will suit you more as per your demands.
Go for cloud hosting, once i trialed cloud hosting when it was in hybrid ive never turned back and here we are with a large company However, it can be overkill if your sites only static content.
Cloud Hosting is based on the latest webhosting technology which do have it's own importance. If you want real time scalability with excellent hosting environment you can consider Cloud Server but it doesn't mean dedicated servers are of no use. Even dedicated servers do have their own importance and have their real value in webhosting industry. It's just the matter of your requirements and the budget so you opt for any of the hosting solutions.
