How can you tell if Google is punishing you in some way?

Hey guys. How do you know if Google is punishing you? My search engine traffic has went down substantially and I'm not ranking at all in the top 5-7 pages for my website. It's in a niche that doesn't have many competitors and I usually rank page top 2 pages within minutes of posting a new article.

So how do I know for sure if Google is penalizing me? Last time the same thing happened, I submitted a reconsideration request and in a few days, my search engine traffic doubled and everything was normal. Why does this keep on happening? Here's my sitemap crawl stats in case it helps:

When the search traffic goes down considerably and instantly, it is a sure shot sign of something annoying the big G, though..I am clueless as to what it could be.

You mentioned of the similar incident earlier too and I wonder if the problem is associated with your niche 'Windows 7'!

I update 1-3 times everyday. Also I have a tool that gives me reports on my ranking for keywords and how often it changes every week and every single keyword went down by 2-6 placings

2-6 places does not sound like a penalty. Maybe some of your link partners got devalued or links got removed. Which term is it that you dropped in ranking? Windows 7? There are some new articles in the top 20 that have not been there a few days ago.

    maybe ghacks ;)
it is just strange that my search traffic has risen each time i submitted a reconsideration request and then generally trend downwards. My search traffic today is 30% of what it was at April which was a few days after I submitted my reconisderation request. Search traffic now is actually lower than my site a few months ago. A few months ago I only had 50% of the kind of traffic I have today so something is definitely going on

It is also happening to me as well... I think because of the tweaks that google is doing, and because it happens real time, so as and when people are searching and the big G tweaking, that's why your traffic drops and rankling went haywire...

Give it some time, I am sure GOOG must be doing something drastic now...

That's what I have expeirenced, these days my traffic dsopped by 1/3, and rankging dropped from first to second for some keywords. Maybe I should add some back links now.
