What I have been doing in situations where I feel that a keyword has alot of competition is to start by looking at related keywords with less competition. Once I pick some out, I start writing for those keywords, sticking in my "core" keywords as I go. Over time, I build up hits on the keywords with higher competition but see related hits sooner and typically faster high placement on those less competitive keywords. I assume that you want targeted traffic and I have found this is the best way to getting traffic so it can build up over time to take down top 10 spots for keywords that have higher competition. For me, it is easier to start with keywords that I feel have weaker competition and just work in my core keywords each time I write for one of the less competitive ones.

Keep in mind that 10 million results in google doesn't mean you really have to "fight" 10 million sites. Alot of the results are from the same sites, different pages. Many of the results are not focused on those keywords and are just there because the keywords happened to be mentioned while they were talking about something else. Some of those results are also going to be sites where their owners are not going out and getting backlinks, optimizing their site for search engines, or even updating their site anymore. Look at the top 50 results from a Google search to get a real idea of what you are up against. 10 million (or whatever the results are for your keyword) as a number is not what you should be focused on. Using "allintitle:" for a search can give you a narrowed down list of who is working on those keywords and didn't just hit a top spot by accident.

Write articles to submit to directories, comment (and post if possible) on related sites, and try to get some link exchanges with related (but not competing) sites. Look hard at sites related to yours that Google seems to like in search results. Let them know that you are would like to write up something for them related to their content and see if they will let you do so. Remember to let them know that you would like a backlink to credit you for providing the information. Start up a blogger blog, wordpress.com blog, squidoo lens, and anything else you feel up to that will allow you to create a targeted content place for Google to find the link to your site. Go to Q&A sites and look for questions posted related to your keywords, or ideally, with your keywords in the question itself. Provide an answer and a link to you site as a reference for where you got the answer.

Tackle high competition keywords like you would a low competition keyword. Just work at it, employing all the methods you can find to get yourself placement. When you have done it all, do it all again, and just keep working at it. Always look for new ways and places where you can build up some credibility with Google as an authority and get yourself placed higher. Work at it or hire someone to work at it if you want to see results. Definitely don't run around with the idea in your head that "Words competition are too high."

mhovingh is right. Try to target low hanging fruits first. :)

It might take some time to even get on the first page for those specific keywords. But of course we need to know your current search engine ranking before we can assume that you have to spend several months to get on the first page.
