    Hello,
Where is located your server? Is it in USA or UK ? Do you have domain with .co.uk ? Do you have backlinks from uk sites ? Did you use Google webmaster tool to setup your traffic ? :)

    My 2 cents

Have you submitted your site to the UK SEs yet. Also, use Google's WMT.

You need to decide which Google you care the most about ranking in - Google.com or Google.co.uk. It's not likely you'll every rank well in both.

If your primary customer base is in the US or you have a global business with customers in multiple countries then I'd suggest you target Google.com and forget about Google.co.uk unless you want to maintain another site with completely different, unique content - one site targeting Google.com and another site targeting Google.co.uk. If your primary customer base in in the UK then maybe you should consider targeting only Google.co.uk.

If you want to target Google.com then it is preferable to have a non-country specific TLD (like .com, .net, .org, etc.) and have your site hosted in the US. You want backlinks from sites that also rank in Google.com.

If you want to target Google.co.uk then it is preferable for your site to have a country-specific TLD (like .co.uk in this instance) and have your site hosted in that country (in the UK in your instance). You want backlinks from other sites that rank in Google.com... typically sites with that country-specific TLD (in your case sites with .co.uk as their TLD).

Either way you should set the Google Webmaster Tools Dashboard -> Settings -> Geo targetting setting according to which ever you are targeting.

    Thanks for the information.

My server is based in America and I have a .com domain name. Both of which sound like are going against me getting high on the UK rankings in google. I have been trying to get back links from UK websites.

I am new to working SEO and chatting to people that know, like you guys, help. I will go look at the Google Webmaster Tool just now.

    Thanks

Well you can target your country with google webmaster's tools but the important things to do is get backlinks from .co.uk domains.

I have the same problem although I am trying to target a global audience so don't really know what to do. I hadn't thought about targeting .co.uk backlinks. I shall do that.

The problem is I am page two for my main keyword google.com but outside the top 5 pages in .co.uk most of my competitors are page 1/2 on both sites and for a range of keywords. I still have plenty of work to do!

Where you host and what your TLD simply adds an little advantage. Not having it, however, won't prevent you from ranking well. Just means you have to work a little harder.

Simply set WMT Geo Targetting setting to UK and work on getting backlinks from .co.uk sites if you want to rank at Google.co.uk.

The .com doesn't matter so much, I have plenty of UK clients with .com addresses - in fact my own company website is a .com in the UK. The main problem will be having your site hosted in the USA, if you want UK preferential results you need to host your site in the UK. Then getting UK backlinks wont hurt either of course, and make sure you have a UK address in your whois info.

I have some sites hosted in Canada (I have dedicated server there).

Everything was pretty nice, except of the situation with 4 of my sites hosted there - one-by-one during last 6 month came out from US tops, but still ranked well in another countries (especially in Canada)

All the sites: 1) with US address in whois; 2) Geo targeting in WMT selected as US about 2 month ago; 3) content and titles of some pages contains mentions of exact US states (and should be useful for visitors from those states); 4) link backs mainly from the sites hosted in US (at least 90% links from USA)

I can't believe, that all that above doesn't enough for Google to target those sites for US audience!

...only one thing doesn't saying for Google that those my sites are targeted for US - IP (server location).

I'll try to move those sites to US IP, but I'm afraid - what if even that wouldn't help me?? :D

And why other my sites (hosted on the same server in Canada) ranked well in US if server location is so important?? :D

PS: all the sites are .com or .org, one of them DMOZ listed, two of them 14 years old...

I am from the USA and rank better with google.uk ranther than google.com anyway I think it has to do with your link partners and where there from.

Its is very common problem beacuse of local search algo of google.. you need to submit your site in .co.uk directories and have to get more back links form UK sites.

One of the reasons for this may be that your site is hosted on a U.S. server. If you want to have more impact on UK search results get a co.uk domain name. It won't take you straight to the top, but it's one thing that influences the SERPs in each country.

Buy hosting in geographically located in UK, then google uk thinks you are relvant to the UK search engine pages. But the marketi is international at this time, people reach for dot com more often than the regional search engines, for example, I often go directly to dot com rather than my regional site, the experience is different.

I agree that hosting located is important.
find sever hosting in geographically located in your specific area.If you live in UK you must find server where located in UK.

But what to do if I have no "specific area"? what if my area is worldwide?
But the biggest EN-speaking traffic volume is in US.
And looks like it's necessary to move such sites to US hosting, right?

I have faced same problem before and after analyzing many things, I got a conclusion that, domain name is important whether it is .co.uk? if not then you have tell the search engine where you want to target. I mean to say GEO setting. and back link is important factor too. Try to take take back links from co.uk domains.
