Most efficient Anti-Virus Software

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations on one already a cliche question. The Anti-Virus software.

I'm just wondering what AV I could use if we talk about "light-on-resources". It seems that with the amount of virus signatures all commercial packages are targeting, anti-viruses have become the most resource-hungry application on one's PC. I personally have not had a trouble with my anti-virus choice but it's been always a good barometer what people around you think about this so old but still actual question.

So, am I looking for something that does work efficient and meanwhile does not torture the CPU/RAM that much! Your choice and opinion, please!
    Thank you!

    Cheers!

I have been using AVG since quite a long time and I have not found it to be very resource hungry.....

Well, I was thinking to go back to some of my oldest choices and here are my observations about AVG.
Recently, the gap between the detection abilities of AVG Free have been rapidly catching up to those of paid subscription AVs. Its detection rate for viruses has increased significantly.

However with that said AVG Free does not, in comparison to many of the major paid AVs, provide protection against spyware and rootkits. Protection against polymorphic viruses and unknown (proactive) viruses is very poor. Its main strength comes from signature-based detection of viruses, but outside that scope it lacks.

Many certifications and tests are given and based on the paid versions of software. While Grisoft's AVG has received ICSA, WCL Checkmark, VB100 certifications and relatively high marks from tests by AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, it is important to note this is via Grisoft's AVG Anti-virus Pro and Anti-Malware versions. But guys don't get me wrong, AVG Free has improved significantly over the past several months and is getting right up there with its paid big brother, but in terms of a history of success it does not compare. At this point we do cry for history but RAMP/CPU efficiency. Consistent history is important, because sometimes the point of switching over to "What's Hot" involves getting burned first.

Now before some of you naysayers and fanboys riot, let's keep in mind that for many viruses and other assorted malware are an all-or-nothing game when it comes to risk. For the average home user, skimping out on more comprehensive protection from paid subscription security software isn't too bad (sometimes). However, when it comes to the propagation of viruses, worms, and botnets (fueling the fire) and lost productivity, money, even identity... it isn't worth it.

And, to be honest, we really can't appreciate a kevlar vest until you've been shot. Especially if that kevlar vest only costs you the equivalent of a cheap lunch once a month or less. So it's kinda to be or not to be!

About Avast...: Avast Home Edition offers "Root-kit" detection along with the option of a "Boot-time" scan. It also offers a "Web" and "Network" shield, I don't believe AVG does....There is almost NO difference between the Home and Professional version protection since both use the very same scan engine...
    What do you think?

I have always been an AVG fan but I think the most recent releases are starting to see the product go downhill. I'm thinking of switching back to Avast, it was always very good too.

The Avast Antivirus looks pretty, but that's about all. I have personally tested this program against viruses you can easily download for educational purposes on the web. I have compressed them, and rescanned them. This program can NOT detect anything that has been passed through a packer/real time compression utility. Such a utility would be ASPACK.
See here for comparison(You have to be logged in).

I am using Avast 4.8 Home Edition alongwith ZoneAlarm since last few months without having any single virus or trojan issue. So i suggest them both.

Yes, Avast is the best antivirus I’ve ever used. I’ve been using it for 6 years. My PC is well protected even with the free edition of Avast :). I’d suggest bunny to go for it.

am using ZoneAlarm security suite. so far so good.. am using zonealarm firewall since 2000 with no second thoughts. i personally feel zonealarm is for people who want to know wat the secuiry software is doing and exactly control how ur security software must work. with advanced rules and schedules available for most tasks, my system / laptop is almost very much free from virus / spyware with 3 layers of firewall, also adding antivirus, antispyware and IM security as well :)

all this for less than 50MB of ur ram :)

ZoneAlarm got their prestigeous place in this category with their very tide Firewall protection. I am sure that everyone would agree with me that ZA have one of the best Firewall development team. To be honest with you guys I've had a moments that the Firewall filtering of the incoming HTTP traffic, the IP monitoring and few others were so heavy so I was forced to uninstall it just because I got outrageously filtered. However, I do think their security suite is one of the top 5 strongest on the market. As for Symantec, I said it above, looks like they throw themself into better designing and look and becoming the biggest Trol amonst all major AV titans.

The most efficient anti virus is ESET NOD 32. It has the highest rank in detecting threats and is very fast since it is heavily written in assembly language.

Yes, Norton works perfect and is always successful in detecting threats. But it requires more CPU and RAM. Hence, in turn reduces the system performance.

Kaspersky is consistently rated highly in independent lab tests. I would go with that.
