There are still a few things unclear to me about backlink building.

    1. Can you be penalised by google for having too many links appear fast? How many links is safe? Is it just for new sites? Could you not get other websites penalised by spamming links to them?

    2. How does the value of a link work? Does the PR of the site affect the links value? Does it matter which page of the site the link is on?

    3. How do the links compare? For example how does a link from the signiture on this forum compare to a link on a blog and to a link on ezine articles.

Basically I need everything there is to know about the quality of backlinks and and any other info. Anything will be greatly appreciated.

It's not just the #, it's the quality of the links also.

Yuppers if the site is new. But it might also work out in their favor, so be careful :)

Hold on :) What are you saying? If you get to many quality backlinks, you can get penalised?

OH I see, do you mean, if you get a lot of quality backlinks, you will not get penalised, while getting a lot of crappy backlinks will get you penalised

A links weight is based off the relevance of the page, the relevance of the domain, and the PR of the page/domain. So a signature link isn't worth too much because it is irrelevant to the content, a link from a related ezine article is worth more, but not as much as a link from a site dedicated to your niche.

    Thanks for replying.

So do we have at least a rough idea of how they compare? IE How many Forum links from a PR5 page will be needed to have a similiar weight, for example from a relevant PR5 site. Is there a big difference or is it more like 2:1

Also what if the leaders in my niche don't have very strong page ranks. Like a 5. Is it the page rank that matters. For example Bodybuilding.com. Huge website. Probably the biggest on the internet in that "niche"

Just because they don't have a high PR, doesn't mean they do not dominate the SERPs.

Bodybuilding.com has over 1,200 links in Google, 1,620,000 pages indexed, has a domain that is ten years old, and has an Alexa traffic rank of 1,376. They are not going to be easy to outrank.

There is a huge difference between a forum link, and a related link on a related site. I don't have an exact number for you, but I would imagine it would be more like 100:1. If you are trying to beat bodybuilder.com, it is really simple. Evaluate their stats (such as the ones I just gave you), and build your site even better than they did.

    1. I don't how many links is to fast, but have heard that you can be penalized google, or put in the sandbox if you are a new site.

    2. A link from a site with a higher pr will have more value. And it does matter what page because different pages of the site have different pr.

There are different theories to that, I have never seen such a penalty on any of my sites (may be I never got down to build 100s of links everyday). For sure if all your links point to your site with same anchor text, there is something fishy.

I would look at PR, traffic, relevancy, position of link (in content is best), is the site active?, how frequently is it crawled / indexed (both are different).

All links are different but you should spend some time getting low quality links as well. Forum links are great for traffic / branding if you are posting on relevant forums.
