I use twitter, digg, stumbleupon and delicious to building links and get some traffic but besides these what are the currently effective social bookmarking sites? I especially intrested in which one gives you decent traffic not just a meaningless backlink?

I've been getting a lot of traffic from my Twitter account. I would say it's one of the best social networking sites out there. Digg is also awesome, both for boosting traffic and backlinks.

My other recommended social bookmarking sites are: Squidoo, StumbleUpon, reddit, Technorati, del.icio.us.

You should use proppeler for getting some really nice backlinks, if you kinow where to look.
Also gets you indexed very fast, if you have new content on your website

Social bookmarking sites - Personally I use digg, stumble and mister-wong as my primary sites. Awhile back Mister Wongs added the nofollow tag. So the value of links from there dropped a lot.

Out of those three, I suggest stumble. Even though I submit to a lot of sites (more then those three), stumble shows up the most in my google webmaster tools.

I feed my RSS into my Facebook profile, both blog and Twitter, and even though I don't fully understand how Facebook works, and I don't have many friends on that one....I get a lot of traffic from there. It must be some kind of search feature ( I should really get on that and figure it out).

Stumble will get you some numbers boosts, but the traffic is worthless to me. It's short attnetion span traffic. They aren't looking for something to read, they are looking for visual stimulation. Bounce rate is high and the traffic does not convert well, if at all.

None of these will work well if all you do is spam your own site all the time. you have to build a well rounded profile, and bookmark other sites and articles...more than your own.

You might also want to try out propeller and mixx. They can send good traffic sometimes.

I don't even have a large number of followers on Twitter but I seem to be getting a lot of traffic from them. I get Digg traffic here and plus get a lot of StumbleUpon traffic but with Digg and stumble none of the traffic converts into clicks where as Twitter seems to convert more into clicks.

You get traffic from twitter by sending a twit to anyone in your contact, they then find it interesting and go to your site(some in tiny URL)...

Dig on the other hand is like Stumble, you get traffic by posting an interesting site, digging the stories of your contacts, something like that...

I think you should use digg and del.ici.us at the moment.

You have to build up a huge network with each of the social networking sites you have mentioned. No one will take you seriously if all you do is submit your site to these sites. You need to network, and share sites from people in related niche.
