I was down a little in January, but February was normal and this month is even better. You are down 50%? That's a lot. You should look and see if you have a bad seed in your site portfolio that is killing your CPC. Find it and remove the adsense. Google will penalize your whole account for ONE bad site. They will smart price you in a second with even one bad site.

I have the same problem. My AdSense Earnings are 40-50% lower than the year before while the number of clicks is still the same. I hope AdSense earnings will go up again very soon!

I am seeing lot of posts.. Strange thing happened in March. I used to make good Income from Adsense which came down last six months. As someone was telling me the click rates began to show some improvement from January.. It continued for February. In March My Income Nosedived and I am making less than the required amount for a check..
I am waiting for an improvement in adsense income myself. April is showing some hope let us see

In golden days (2003-04) I have made fortunes with adsense. Currently I make may be 25% of what I was making with same or a bit more traffic.

in good old times until summer 2007 my eCPM was more than tiwice from now
but now my content / traffic is more than twice from then
hence the total is about the same despite the crisis
last month march 2009 exact number was 0.84% less than same month 2008.

What amazes me is that in my 4 plus years with Adsense no one has really come in and seriously challenged Google. I am just one person but all of their ideas like video ads, referrals, feeds and mobile ads have been complete flops for the most part. Sure, some people make a little extra but for most of us they end up being a waste of time.

As I have seen my traffic remain pretty stable over the past 4 years, the click through rate and pay out will never be what it was years ago. Those days are gone, people have become too saturated with the ads and in some cases use browsing tools to just turn them off.

As far as affiliates, they have all been complete failures for me in the dating world. Many are complete thieves and do not even make an attempt to conceal it. You catch them red handed and they just blow you off or send you some canned BS email.

I have actually lost interest is the whole Adsense game. I still bring in $600 a month (unlike $1000 a month 2005/2006) but most of it gets sucked right back in the site for hosting and my own ad expenses.

Why does it cost so much more to get an Adwords ad displayed, compared to a few years ago, but my Adsense earnings have dropped about 40%? Google is keeping more of the profits is the only explanation I can come up with.

The problem seems to be in the Depression. The operating expense of google will increase every year. With adwords income down, they may need more share to pay their expenses. So the publisher share out of adwords income is coming down rapidly..
I agree with you when you said no body challenged them in the last 4 years. Well many competitors mushroomed but no worthy competitor..
Affiliate income is in the same category. With no income people are not ready to spend..
But I believe a worthy competitor will be the need of the hour. It could really benefit publishers like us..

the current global crisis acts as a filter
lots of monkey businesses go out of existence or into low gear survival mode
thousands of business have to regroup and restructure all across the world, even largest business as the current US-auto industry shows
all businesses also may have to restructure ad campaigns or drop product lines to survive

with decreasing ad competition from fewer surviving advertisers, we obviously experience decreased bidding resulting in lower overall eCPM

IMO the current low adsense is nothing else but a mirror of our global economy situation
in good times people care little where or how they spend dollars
in times of crisis - the first step always is to reconsider each and every dollar spent - just as many governments have to do these weeks and months.

some may be lucky to publish in a strong language ( in a strong economy ) others may become victim of their own culture

a good idea in such times of industrial economy crisis is to refocus on topics and niches that are crisis-proof, useful all times to all, helpful to as many, catering to real human needs rather than luxury items or luxury topics.

share true values in your content - go multi-lingual to cross borders and spread our visitors to as many countries as possible.
