Hosting Company Put me in collections

About a year ago I bought a few domains through 1 and 1. Then about 3-4 months in I told them to cancel my account and drop everything. I thought it was all done with then a year later I get a call from collections saying I owe money to them!

Apparently They did not close my account but froze all the domains and then kept billing me and even charging a late fee. So yesterday i shot them an email saying basically what ive said here and told them i would not pay. So now tonight I got a phone call from collections saying I owe money to them, and now when i got log into my account, I cant cuse they canceled the account. But still apparently want the money for service which i never asked for or used. Im obviously calling them tommorow but what steps do I take if they don't do anything because I have seen that they like to pull this kind of stuff.

Until they learn how to break kneecaps through telephones, I would not worry.

What are you worried about anyway? If you don't owe the money, don't pay. What are they going to do, sue you?

Yes, it can hurt your credit. Even if you are in the right it could take months to clear it up on you account. However, it is a small amount and won't affect it too much. If you do not want to pay, wait to see if it appears on your credit reports (all three) and then dispute it. Even if the dispute does not remove it from the credit report, you can leave comments explaining the situation that a potential creditor will read.

mytvtalk is right, I've ran into the same issue through the years when magazine companies renew your subscription even after you tell them to cancel the account. Then you explain you didn't get the service anyways and credit collection keeps bugging you in hopes of making their commission. Just ignore them and they'll go away, the cost of pursuing legal action on something they don't have positive support your liable for isn't advantageous enough for them.

aparently he did not cancel his account as accounts are all automated, and it is obvious
that he did not follow up either. even a ding on your credit can last for years...
pay the bill, be done with it...it is just that simple. at this ponit it does not matter
who is right or wrong, you are in the hands of the collection company...pay it and move on...
if the collection company has reported you, then it can stay on your report for at least 7
years, if they have not reported it yet, be thank-full and get them paid fast.

your credit report almost always takes the word of the collection company, and I assure
you they do not care if you are right or wrong when it hits your report. If you care about
your credit at all, deal with the collection company, once it is reported, it will be there
for a very long time, and that could make the difference of a higher or lower interest
rate on just about anything...keep your credit clean...

How much? Like seriously, if it's $20... pay it. Your credit report will be smeared for years if you don't.

If the debt collectors start phoning you or turning up on your doorstep, use the golden words: "I dispute, please validate", and inform them that you will not accept further communication in person or in the workplace.

Make sure you have records of your request to cancel your account and the corresponding response from 1&1 staff.

If you're in collections, then there's a chance it WILL go on your credit report. I'd suggest contacting them to work out a deal.

I got this from some rubbish servers company I used called DMEHosting, I cancelled my server which made them angry and tried to force me to continue paying.

When I said no they threatended to send to collections - I said I didn't care - so they did. I got a letter and replied to it saying I don't owe them money it's their problem. They didn't reply back so I replied again asking what the status was and they said they were investigating.

I never heard anything back, they haven't reported it or anything and it's not on my credit report. Just ignore it.

hahah, your too funny..if these guys are smart enough to report him to collections, do you think they do not already have his SS number? they may have advanced record searching, if that is the case, then it would not be to hard to find his ss number at all...I never gave my ss number to columbia house, but they found enough info to send me to collections. if you exist, then creditors can find you....

since hosting deals with much smaller numbers, but if they subscribe to a collections reporting, then they can report you, even though it is unlikely, and nothing to gain over just a few dollars.. I have been sent to collections on as little as $25, not hosting related, so their threat could be just a threat, or it could be real if they have collections access, but a $20 collections would not hurt nearly as much as something into the $1000's....there is no advantage in turning you over to collections for $10 here, and $20 there, and they have to pay for this type of service also.

All collections companies have full access to your information including your ssn, 1and1 is not the only company that does this. I canceled my account with hostgator 4 years ago and somehow they said I owed them for 1 month, it turned out they sent me to collections for $6.99.

It just shows you that they are in face a legit company and not some group of kids. lol

I had a similar problem a few years ago, but when i emailed them that i wanted the account cancelled i received a confirmation notice that they received my cancellation request, so i changed nameservers etc and moved to another host, several months later i received an invoice from the other host saying i owed them, i emailed tham and called them and they were having none of it saying i never cancelled my account so i owe them money, if i did not pay they would take me to court. my view was OK go ahead, so this is what they did i received a legal letter giving me a court date they never even bothered with collections. I passed all these onto my legal team who investigated this host and found i was not the only one they have done this to, so when we went to court this was presented to the judge, becuase the never went through collections and i have a confirmation that they received my cancellation notice so i owed them nothing and as they had done this before the judge ordered them to pay cost, compenstaion to me and then gave them 7 days to close their business down and banned them from running another business for 12 years.

Where do you live that a judge can ban you from opening a business?

Wow and you actually believed him, a judge has never banned a person from opening a business. But it is possible that the government can, look at it as a privilege and not a right.

If its in collections, then chances are it is already on your credit report.

Best to ask them to check their E-mail and FTP logs. Tell them after you requested cancellation of the account, you never logged in to FTP. This way they can verify whether you used the account or not. Agree to pay them up to the date you requested cancellation and nothing more.

    Good luck.

I am very skeptical about the previous post but it does not make statements like yours any more true. Your blanket statement is certainly untrue, whereas his was just probably untrue.

I have seen courts ban someone from operating a certain type of business within a particular county for a period of 10 years. It can and does happen. It depends on the circumstances.

I'm sure they sent you to in-house collections not a collection agency.

They also dont have your SSN unless you gave it to them during sign up.
