Have you ever faced a situation like this? You have a good knowledge of a particular subject, you know that you can create quite interesting original content on this topic, you know that people (who are interested in this subject) will love your website. However, when you searched for the popularity/demands of this niche topic (in overture, google trends, niche bot and other tools etc) , you find that this topic has very few takers. Very few and occasional search are conducted for this subject. In short your particular niche has very few takers. You still can make a very good website on this topic (in view of your past experience and present knowledge of this subject), but you just can’t make any substantial money from it using Adsense. I recently faced one such situation. I am interested in a particular topic over which I believe I can write some very good original content. But this niche has very little demand on internet. This has really confused me. I thought, thought and thought. Questions arise in my mind : What I actually want : Money or a satisfaction of helping people (no matter how small they are in numbers) in that particular niche ? Probably I was expecting both. After reading numerous time about this : “Do what you love, do what you strongly believe in and the money will follow†I found it really difficult to stop myself from making this site. However, when I find that it’s not going to make me any money, the other mundane things of life arise and overwhelm me --: What’s the use of it when you will not make a dime with it. True, you have gained experience, you have get a good knowledge, but why waste time writing about it when it has so few takers. Just keep doing your present job and leave it for the time when money will lose all it’s relevance to you and you will be happy to help people free of cost. (Probably after your retirement.) At that time, just write a book on this topic and self-published it and market it to your niche audience. But for the time being leave this topic no matter how close it is to your hearts as the money (& time) are also two important consideration which you can’t ignore. Any advice ?
Hi Shekhar, I faced this situation and finally decided to came out with the website instead of money. I believe that no matter how many peoples visit my website currently, in future definetly my site will attract more visitors and I hope I will be paid back for all my efforts I put now. Since you believe that peoples will love it you can go ahead with the website. This is my opinion. Think twice before you take a decision.
MY 2 cents are... Think of it like this. Create the site on the subject that you love. Make it great, pour your knowledge into it. But also consider it speculation, one day the niche may explode and you will already be listed in the SERPs, be well known by the people who already search for it. You could be at the forefront of an emerging market and not know it. Good luck.
TCR is totally right! That is usually how it happens. Its easier to get popular before its popular then getting popular WHILE its popular. if that makes sense!
First of all thanks to all for such nice inputs. I think it depends upon the niche which may or may not explode. If somebody creates a site on next olympic or commonwealth Games, then he may expect his niche to explode at the right moment. Or if somebody creates a site on a still unknown but extremely promising technology of the future, he may expect an exlposion in his niche in future. In my case, the niche is related to developing a particular trait (quality) in human character. Many people have it naturally and many people learn it through trial and error. I belong to the second category. That's why I said I had the experience. Basically this niche can be termed as a part of self-help industy. However if we observe it, Self -Help itself is a very very wide term(niche). Searching about a specific area on self help tells us how much(or less) is the demand in that area. In short this niche is not going to explode in future in view of it's very nature. However, it's a niche which will be in demand always (though only among those who need it). This entire discussion has just sparked a new thought in my mind. Instead of focussing on this very limited niche of self help, if I try to diversify/broaden my subject and build a general website on 'Self-Help' I can attract more visitors and from that site, I can show them my expertise on that particular niche. I know that it'll be a long route and will require extra effort on my part. But at this juncture it's the only appropriate alternative I suppose.
