What is the gender neutral term for "webmaster" or another term that means the same thing? I've been writing articles all day and I'm brain dead at this point.
The word "webmaster" has no gender. The word "master" means "to be or become completely proficient or skilled in..." and that would mean that a "webmaster" is someone who is completely proficient or skilled in web design/programming/marketing...(all the things involved with being a webmaster.)
I think you need to be an eunuch no it just means writing that does not adhere to men or women in the singular connotation it can work for either gender
Thanks for your suggestions. The feminine version is "mistress." Master has more than one definition and is perceived as being male. (I've talked to a lot of females who run websites and some of them don't like the word webmaster because of the connotation that they must be male.) Winner so far!
Quite a nice explanation. I think that webmaster is used for both males and females so it is a common word.
The "website owner" is NOT necessarily the same as the "webmaster". For example, the WEBMASTER of a website owned by General Motors (The WEBSITE OWNER) is a real PERSON while the owner is a CORPORATION, which can NEVER be a WEBMASTER. This illustrates a typical problem of trying to force GRAMMATICAL gender to match PHYSICAL gender. The only solution is to remove ALL GRAMMATICAL gender from the language. To be specific, ban HE & SHE and call everyone IT, for example. And get rid of words like perSON, MANufacture, woMAN, huMAN, and so on. Needless to say, doing such a thing is totally ridiculous.
Master in Webmaster referes to the skill of the person he/she is not an aprentice he/she is a Master, mistress is another thing and should not be confused with Master in this context. Its like if you are female and you get your Master's degree, you are Master of Computer Science not Mistress of Computer Science. Following that logic Webmaster is gender free.
