nofollow Allowed, Impressions Count Towards Weight

Surely penalising sites using nofollow shows that it is infact a link network?

This must be one of very few "advertising" networks where it works like this no?

 

I keep hearing 'advertisers' wouldn't...

I am curious if we are going to call this an advertising network then let's get our ads front line and center, top fold, banners, larger text sizes, etc. Now we are talking, my understanding, of advertising...where you can be seen. I am not saying make it mandatory, perhaps further develop your algo to reward those that place ads in prime real estate with more weight. Why are we talking nofollow? So Google doesn't possible penalise you.

The way I see it is you can only go 1 of 2 ways.

1) A true advertising network designed to advertise ONLY, in no way shape or form could this be translated to manipulation of serps. EFFECTIVE IN YOUR FACE advertising

2) Welcome to the world of Google BH.

Having been a member of DP since 2004 I have always respected Shawn's way of not hiding anything from anybody. So I suspect #1 is where DP would like to go. To do this is going to be tricky with the new Google. The advantage DP has is Google peops are here everyday. Not really sure if that matters as it seems it is an algo that's causing these issues.

For example I am aware of certain other networks that have branched out. They have said if Google wants to impose penalties then we are taking this to the underground with selected, elite members to quietly grow a network that openly discusses Google isssues.

I really can't say what is best for DP . Whatever is decided I am sure that Shawn will do what's best for members. The problem is, I am sure than even Shawn is struggling to come up with a workable solution. Not because he doesn't want to but rather the new Google has made it very difficult to confidently make such decisions.

What about all the people who will run no-follow on their ads but get better links back?

Arn't they getting over? Shouldn't people give exactly what they get back?

 

Wouldn't the weight adjustment value vary depending on who put those values in place (you, Shawn)? I'm sure a lot of people would value a nofollow link with a weight of 0 as oppossed to weight=30%.... know what I mean?

 

Homer raises a good point about certain parts of the page being more valuable real estate than others.

I certainly pay more for links in the hot zones than in the footer.

How you would set something like this up is another matter. Maybe if you tracked click throughs on the ads it would be a better way of determining value than ad location?

 

Its pretty much impossible to determine if an advert is in a valuable part of a website. People would alter it with CSS and every site has different hotspots. Thats why tracking clicks would be the best way to see if an advert was in a good place or not.

 

Hehe... I didn't say it was my view, just assuming a lot of people would have that view Smartass.

 

But does it not take away value from those that choose not to? I mean, people that use the nofollow tag get less weight, but it's not like 1/10th or anything... know what I mean?

 

I guess the real question is, what does the formula/you think they are worth? Half? 66%? 33%? 75%

!!!! then it was mis-guidance in accounts previously that more ads will bring more reward

 

I don't know, am I doing smthing wrong, but the rel=nofollow link implementation doesn't work. If I want to show "nofollow" text ad link, it shows plain text banner ad link, without nofollow attribute. If I uncheck "nofollow" it works fine, but also without the nofollow attribute.

Sorry Shawn but I smell some sloppy coding here...


... I see it now: in line 53 of ad_network_xxx.php file replace '&type=linknf=1' with '&type=link&nf=1'

 

Shawn is weight affected based on banner vs text or static vs dynamic? I know more ads = more weight but was wondering about those other options.
