Alternatives to Simple Machines Script

    I was considering changing one of my sites from Simple Machines to something better. Can anyone make some rec's?

    thats it, the only thing better then smf is vb.
    anything else is a mistake.

    i've been using smf, but i'm really frustrated by the amount of spam that my site gets (i get high traffic so seem to have attracted the attention of spammers over the last few months). I installed the smf anti-spam mod which helped somewhat... is VB better at preventing spammers?

    There's several good alternatives, such as:
    vBulletin
    SMF
    PHPBB
    IPB

    Some of these are paid and some free. I would recommend you to check the free ones first so you don't spend your money on something you could have gotten for free.

    Which free one's features are the most like vBulletin? In terms of conversion, how hard is this? SMF is just way too basic and hard to manage.

    I would suggest vBulletin/IPB if your thinking of using non-free forum. Why spend? Then I would suggest SMF and Phpbb

    phpBB is probably the most secure. Ever since v2 it has received some pretty bad reviews, v3 has no known vulnerabilities yet and has been around for a few years.

    Anything that vBulletin can do, phpBB can do with a MOD. ;)
