ODP "Explore the Taj Mahal - Armchair Travel provides a virtual tour of the monument via a map and 360-degree panoramas. Offers narration and music. [English, French, Hindi, Japanese]" Google (search term "taj mahal") "Explore The Taj-Mahal - Virtual tour of the Taj Mahal with a user friendly interface. [English/French]" Google (search term "explore the taj mahal") "Explore The Taj-Mahal - Explore the Taj Mahal, a free 360° online Virtual Tour of the Taj Mahal in India, produced by Armchair Travel Co Ltd, UK, free school resources, news, ..." All three have virtual tour in the description - what am I missing here? Only one is provided by the ODP. If you think of it from the surfer's point of view - it becomes easier to understand. How does it help the surfer to delist a working, useful, website?
With respect Mam. Does it matter whether or not your missing something. They just wanted out. If I was in the military and I wanted not to be drafted does that affect the whole military organizational tree ?
Ok ok I'll rephrase - Why does the OP think it's a result of the DMOZ listing? Based on what I see in the search results - it doesn't appear to be the case. Is that better?
Time and again when submitters ask us when the site would be listed. We answer that improving your site would certaiinly put your site in an extra ordinary position in SEARCH. You won't be needing a listing. The surfers would see it anyway. But in this case it is better to delist since the owner of the business is being affected. Maybe it is much more PRODUCTIVE for him to get his site delisted than being listed. I can delist my phone listing in a telephone directory. That is my choice.
Imocr, thanks for your reply. In tests of many data centers for Google, I only see the "Taj-Mahal" listing (with the hyphen) and that description is out of date. One DMOZ editor removed that (waiting now) due to it's being a duplicate listing, which is fine with me. We want our old Google title back, or something that includes "virtual tour" (like many others on DMOZ already), to let searchers KNOW that we are NOT a travel agent. NO, the description is not enough. When the DMOZ title appeared in Google, our visitor rate dropped by around 40%. We know this because the old title appeared, then disappeared several times before settling into the DMOZ short title. Every time the DMOZ title appeared, our Google directed visitor rates dropped. We do NOT want Google using your short title. Since you won't use the title I requesteds, it's better just not to have you. DMOZ accounts for less than 1% of our traffic anyway; we're better off without you. Your title is damaging our Google traffic.
Does it matter ? He just wants to opt out. Do we have to Shoot him or put in the stockade ? Maybe that is only the means of livelihood and we are depriving them of their income by not delisting their site, since their site would be better off not listed.
But the title on the website is "Explore the Taj Mahal" - if you want the title in the directory changed you have to change your website first.
Thanks. I could not get any one of EIGHT other DMOZ editors to tell me that, and believe me, I tried and tried (over ten hours on this stupid thing today!) What I did not realise until an hour or so ago (thanks to one DMOZ editor) is that you are looking at the GRAPHIC on the home page, NOT the Title meta tag. That was never stated anywhere! I did not know you were ignoring the page title!
We Actually (!!!) had our business number de-listed in London a few years ago.... Here's why: Our company name "Armchair Travel" was being used by a BUS company, painted on all their buses. Their company name was "Armchair Passenger Transport", so we got (typically) 50 - 100 calls per day from people wanting bus schedules in London. They would not change the name on their buses (strange UK laws), so we HAD to unlist our phone number. ( Our real customers usually got our name "word of mouth" from our 100% satisfied customers. We've never in over ten years had ANY unhappy customers. Not even ONE complaint! ) So, there.
Thanks. But no thanks. I don't like your guidelines, and you yourselves breach them all the time anyway, so I don't care. I just don't want YOUR title on my Google listing. Pharoah, let my people go! De-List us please. ( In any case, within a couple of days, I will be blocking your links into our sites via my .htaccess, then your searchers will get a "Access Denied" when they click on the DMOZ links to our sites. HA! In the end, you will either put "virtual tour" -- like 50+ other DMOZ listed sites -- on our DMOZ title, or you will be blocked )
Originally posted by lmocr You mean you have a booming business ? Frankly speaking I'm broke right now and can't buy a BEER and I need to buy Coors Light. Could you possibly loan me some for a 12 pack ? For donelson You must learn when to do your homework. There are lot of peeps who wants a listing and be listed. They have to wait for years and call the eds arrogant as you stated. I will be happy to assist you in delisting your site so the next in line could be listed. Capish.
We don't tell you what to do with your site. Don't tell us what to do with our site. Go away. Your site will not be delisted. Period.
Kind of. If by "club" you mean a group of people that volunteer their time trying to help others improve their searching of the Internet.
In the end, all things said, I don't really care at all about DMOZ.... ONLY that Google are sucking in your titles, which hurts our traffic. When I set up the .htaccess -- Then your listings of our sites will be worthless; dead links. Ha.
Thanks, but that's really not my style... ( I do not really blame the DMOZ editors for what they put on their site, as long as they are fair. Note that many other sites ARE DMOZ listed with "virtual tour" in their titles, but not ours, which is unfair. And only that Google are stealing their titles, which is hurting our traffic )
