Wikipedia Promotion

I got banned from Wikipedia today, and one of their admin (a frustrated and angry one probably) reversed every single one of my links that I added since I registered back in 2006 without giving me any explanation... LOL

I don't care that much, I never gained any traffic from them. I just find it ridiculous because some of those links were actually unique and well-written articles that would have been helpful for the end users. I have seen so many crappy links on Wikipedia that have never been removed... I find it weird that they consider some links as advertising and some links not.

What's your thoughts about using Wikipedia as a source for promoting your site? Anybody is gaining valuable traffic and/or PR from his work on Wiki? I noticed that a lot of applications that "calculate" the Strength of your website (like websiteoutlook.com) search for wiki links as part of their analysis.

    Share your thoughts...

One of my not-for-profit sites is linked prominently in Wikipedia articles but I never gained much benefit from it. Its only good as a "feel-good" factor, but I think marketing via Wikipedia is way over-hyped.

Sites like websiteoutlook don't mean diddly squat :) No one's getting PR from their stuff on Wiki... you can always complain to someone above the editors if you think it was unjustified.

Wikipedia is all about persistence and patience. To some extent the model is flawed because what you see is often from the most persistent its not necessarily the most accurate or best information IMO.

Wikipedia is about information. If your links consistantly don't add value to the website information and you keep pushing and pushing to try and get links on wikipedia, from my point of view it's obvious you are not trying to make a better wikipedia but only using it for your benefit.

So seems reasonable that if there is anything that can make anyone think you are doing this to be banned.

Wikipedia is over-hyped as far as using it for promotion. Like others have said I have had links on high traffic pages without spamming and even contributed other links but none brought in anything.

Absolutely. Any site with adsence is banned even if it is a valuable link. :(
