How is this possible?

    A friend of mine at school has a site stocksonwallstreet (dot) net

    He has 0 back links and has no knowledge of seo. However he is on page one of Google for the term stocks on wall street which is yielding him unreal traffic from Google. I knowbecause I manage his site for him.

    The blog has been around for no more than 4 months. How is this possible?

    find , some high pr or very trusted site may linking to your site.

    It is known as must rank.

    In order for Google to be the most relevant search engines then keyword searches that match the URL, must return the site that owns the domain at the upper results.

    For example

    search for pepsi then pepsi.com should be # 1

    search for walmart then walmart.com should be # 1

    search for national football league then nfl.com should be # 1
