    Hello,
    I am Addy.
If I want a court to appoint a lawyer for me at government expense, what must I do? What are the basic formalities should I have to complete?

I'm not sure about the formalities, but I do know you need to do whatever it takes to get a better lawyer.
'Public defenders' don't have a great track record for defending people.

    Good luck

Where are you from? You can't just expect us to know this. If you really want an answer you need to provide as much specifics as possible.

Get your own lawyer... you don't want a public defender.

Also, what kind of crime did you ALLEGEDLY commit? No one can give you good advice without knowing details. Remember, you allegedly did whatever it is you're accused of. Make sure not to self incriminate when telling us a little more.

they usualy appoint you one at your pelemary hearing, if you dont have enough funds for a lawyer, then they give you the form at the pelemery hearing and set it up there with a public defender.

thats how they do it in Va. anyway.

The do not provide a free attorney in civil matters, only criminal matters. If you were cheated and the amount is less than $7500 then you can sue him in Small Claims Court yourself without a lawyer. If you tell me which city you are in I can direct you to the forms to use.

If the person lives in another state or country and the amount was not very much, then just forget it and move on with life.
