WANT TO EARN MONEY PLAYING ONLINE POKER? ASK A POKER "PRO"!

Hey everyone! My name is Patrick (callmelucid).

I am new here but want to get to know people and build my reputation a bit. I encourage all of you to ask me questions about how to make money online playing poker!

    About Me:

I was amazed at how much money can be made playing poker. I do a bunch of things for a living now but when I first started out making money online, I scraped by teaching myself to play poker. I have been reading DP for a while now but have recently decided to make an account to "give back" to you guys who have helped me so much. Since this is a site on making money online i figure why not help people out at what i am good at.

You can find me playing a variety of levels and games at a few of the major poker sites online but my recent accomplishment was bringing my PokerStars account from $0-$1000 in one month! I am currently writing an e-book on my method but I am free to answer questions about anything poker related including my recent cash game success, sit-n-gos, etc.

    ASK AWAY!

the only poker affiliates i have are pokerstars and fulltilt poker. they have a pretty good payout for people who deposit on their website but the thing is there is heavy competition. $100+ per sign up isnt bad though if you can get em

the only money i make in poker is at the table :)

What are some common traps new poker players should avoid? Bad betting strategies, etc.

    good question!

most players tend to call too much. that is gambling. they hope to strike the next card and "win big". poker is a game to win in the long haul.

my advice to most beginners and intermediate players is to play more in late position and to hardly play at all from early position. this positional advantage over your opponents will give you the upper hand in betting on three streets.

also, i tell these players to tighten up their game. it is good to be playing only about 10-16% of your hands when you are just starting. once you get better you can open up a little more if you choose to play a more loose game.

here is a good beginner hand chart i made for hand selection:

Do you mostly play sit n gos or cash games? I was fuming when I had a full house cracked by a bigger full house on the river today.

So if you could turn 0 into $1,000 then you should be able to turn $1,000 into $1,000,000 right?

ya i'm sure there are. feel free to post it here too as i am curious myself. i just signed up for those two for the hell of it because they are the two most popular in the USA

    OUCH!

ya i mostly only play full ring cash games now. every now and then i play 6-max cash or sng's (though i started my poker career with sng's lol)

here are my sng stats which is basically when i started playing poker:

but i like the cash games because i can multitable and pull out more money in a month. here is my graph when i went from $0-$1000 in the month of january

well my next goal is $1,000 to $10,000. after that i'm not sure if i should do $10,000-100,000 or if i should put a down payment for a condo or something. we'll see :)

there are two ways to answer this for two different sets of statistics.

i think you are talking about poker odds. poker odds are actually really easy to do in your head so i dont know why people buy odds software lol. basically count your outs then multiply it by 2 for each street left.

say you have a flush draw on the flop. there are 13 cards to a suit and from looking at the board, you know 4 of them are in play (leaving 9 outs left to make the flush). so 9*2*2=36% chance to win the hand by the river. this all becomes mental math after a little practice.

the other stats to know are players tendencies like how often they play hands, how often they raise, etc. if you are playing one table of the micro limits, you dont need to bother because they all play close to the same and you can spot the maniacs easily since your full attention is on one table. if you decide to take poker seriously or multitable though, i would strongly suggest getting a program like pokertracker3 or holdem manager to track players. you are literally losing money without it

You can say that again. First time I have had that happen to me, and I've been playing a while.

This part of the game is most important to become a winning poker player IMHO. To add to what you have said, you also want to be able to adapt to certain styles of play.

exactly. once you start moving up, you will see players who play a certain way (and some who will adjust their styles to accommodate to you or other players). where the skill comes in apart from the math is to understand the players tendencies and put them in tough positions.

do you have your hand history for that full house hand? at least you didnt get beat by quads  i've had that happen to me twice in my life lol

Unfortunately I didn't save the hand history. But it basically went like this...

    PF I had 5h5c.

    Flop was 4c, 10c, Qc

Turn was 5d hitting my set. They donked it and put in a massive all in heaps more then the pot. I instant called and they turned over Qd10h.

River was Qh and they hit their 4 outer.

    Happy days

Good players will also calculate the ev (expected value) of a play. Software just makes all of this easier.

Whats your full tilt username? Ill play you heads up for $100

    Only joking :)

Do you play tight or aggressive? I tend to just play the top ten pocket cards on limit tournaments, it seems to fair me pretty well playing tight, until I get a chip lead on the 400/200 blinds then I play really aggressively

TAG is a good style (tight aggressive) but you have to play whatever you are comfortable with. When you start playing higher stakes you have to be prepared to call bluffs a lot more. On the lower limits they play pretty robotically.
