When I run out of ideas for link building...

....do a link query at YSE on another company who's in my niche.

Particular attention is paid to someone with a higher PR than mine.

For example: my site is a PR 4. Another Wedding DJ company in a different US state is PR 5---- I will YSE the external links ("inbound links") of that site, excluding all links from its own domain.....this will give me about 1000 good links.

Usually, I can come up with about 50-100 new free directories (do follow) in my niche, 10-15 article sites with category (do follow) in my niche, and perhaps 2-3 new forums in my niche(do follow).

By the end of a few hours......I will have maybe 50 new links!

I do this once a month....

For free directories, you can simply monitor the solicitations section of this forum :) You will save some time.

Good tips DJMC, thanks for sharing.
I do a few of those things, there are lots of free directories on this forum but its also good to see the ones your competitors use because you can find some specialized ones in your niche.

Yeah, I have done the same thing for quite a few of my websites. If I come across a high PR site in the same niche as me I check where it's getting it's links from using YSE and then get to work. Very effective way of doing things as it provides you with an instant list of places to get links from.

Looks like you are getting good amount of dofollow backlinks there. I have never try out this method. Will check it out on next link building campaign.

Good strategy all around, what you're describing is basically "competition analysis" .. there's a bunch of search queries which can help you out here too to find even more opportunities to mimic your competitor's link building efforts..

Go to competitors’ site: linkdomain:www.competitor'ssite.com “add link”
    “Submit url”
    “submit link”
    Donate/vbulletin/gelsoft/add url/region:Canada
Can also add keyword to make it longtail query

hope you enjoy the tips and put them to good use
