Lost ranking & traffic after redesigning a website

We have lost huge number of visitors after redesigning a website. In old design we have got good amount of traffic through organic results. We have redesigned our website with the same content, same navigation structure and also we used the same onpage optimization factors. But we have noticed huge impact on search engine results. Any ideas to retrieve our results back?

You just need to give it some time to settle in. . .

If it is well optimised your results should return in a few months.

are all of the urls exactly tthe same??

if so there shouldnt be any reason it doesnt recover very quickly but i would wonder why it dropped so far initially.

if the url's are different then you need to use proper 301's on all the old urls

Normally it will happen when you change your on page factors and it take some to settle down.

Continue your link building it will back soon.

When I changed my site around it took about a week for it to come back in the SERPs but it came back stonger then it was before. Hopefully you will see similar results. Cheers!

I agree 100%... This is a mistake often made by sites undergoing a redesign. They change their URL structure, forget to implement 301 redirects, and wham! They disappear from the SERPs because their new URLs are not getting credit for the old URLs' inbound links.

Even if you implement the 301s, you can expect to see a 1-6 month dip in organic traffic and rankings while the engines 'absorb' your changes. You basically have to wait on them to recrawl all of the inbound links (so all sites linking to you) and calculate the PR and other ranking factors for the new URLs.

I would keep an eye on Google Webmaster Tools Dashboard -> Diagnositcs -> Web Crawl... Pay special attention to all of the tabs, especially Not Found and Not Followed, for problems.
