Some of you have posted about how far back you go in computers. Realistically, 95% of you old-timers are probably more advanced than I am on the tech side.

But just for discussion :), I took my first computer course at University of Pittsburgh in 1965. It was a programming course, using the language then called MAD. (Michigan Algorithm Decoder). The computer took up half of a big room's entire floor. And our data entry was via punch cards!

Does anyone predate that? Or am I the fossilized Grandpa of Digital Point?

BTW, nice post by the original poster. Green rep coming.

Good post but I think shared hosting is fine for start up sites. I have it for €20 a year a VPS is €50 a MONTH!

Ha! You've got me beat by four years. I was studying Fortran in college in '69. We punched our programs to paper tape and got the results back on greenbar the next day. So far you are the fossilized Grandpa of DP!

Northwestern, 1963, pure machine language, and punch cards. My early home-builts, in the late seventies, used a bank of eight toggle switches and a push button set switch to enter instructions. Getting a hexadecimal keypad was heaven.

Did anyone else ever use a model 19 or 33 TTY terminal?

    cheers,

    gary

kk5st, that is impressive. My farthest stretch is TRS-80 machines, hooked up to a tape deck and a black and white security monitor, with an industrial keyboard pulled out of a Northern Telecom cable plant hacked up to interface with the computer (God, the native "keyboard" on those things sucked). Between that and marveling at floating point performance with an onboard math co-processor in the AT&T PC-6300, I'm not exactly an "I.T. youngster" but you've certainly got me beat by a fair stretch :).

SmallPotatoes, that sure looks like a Dutch sign there, private property... on that photo you posted. Is that sitting in a Dutch or Indonesian museum now? : )

W00t, the crusties are flaunting their crustiness!

Click and Clack: "and out of the inky shadows of the dimly-lit Quonset hut comes Crusty..."
