Virtual dedicated means it is a dedicated virtual operating system on a shared server. There could be several virtual users per computer. Generally you are allocated a certain amount of disk space and RAM. You are still at the mercy of how well the server is segmented. Generally it is a good alternative to your own server, but sometimes other users can cause problems.

A dedicated server means it is your server, nobody else is using it. You can use as much resources and bandwidth as the setup allows.

On virtual server, even if you have dedicated ram, hd, and cpu ressources, you are on a share use regarding disk i/o, this could cause a problem.

You can go for a VPS and if it doesn't fix your problem you can upgrade it to a dedicated server.

this is a good advice. When choosing your host, ask them how easily you could upgrade to a dedi and if they would transfer you.

If your site is growing too fast already I would skip the VPS and go Directly to the Dedicated Server. Do not waste your time migrating from Server to Server every 3-6 months. I would also suggest going with a managed server VS a unmanaged. The managed saves you time and keeps your server running so you can spend time on your business not your server. I can recommend Server Intellect if your in need of good support and quality service.

I would rather go for VPS before switching to Dedicated. Why? It's all about the budget you have. It's true dedicated offer you more freedom in term or resource usage but by trying a VPS before you go for dedicated you can test which one suits you the most.. Why pay more when you have less needs ^^
