I was just wondering, say you have a website on cooking and one of your links is from a pr5 travel site and another link is from a pr2 cooking site. Will the pr2 cooking site have more effect of my pr because of it's relevancy? Or is the pr5 travel site still going to have more effect on my pr even though it's not relevant? Or... is the pr5 travel site not going to have any effect at all ?? because it is not relevant? I guess this leads to another question... does Google even give you pr at all if the site linking to you is not relevant? thanks.
PR isn't affected by relevancy. However, your position in the SERPs is. You'll be higher in the search engine rankings by getting links from related sites. But if all you care about is PR then then you want to collect links from as many high PR sites as possible regardless of their relevancy.
It's not even worth caring about - use the time you're spending wondering about this to get more links A link is a link IMO. Some are worth more than others, but even that PR5 travel site's link is still worth something to a site about xylophones
Relevancy is nothing to worry about. A link is a link is a link. I have all kinds of links from unrelated sites and google counts them just like everything else.
Google does take incoming link niche into account, but from personal experience it doesn't seem like it makes a huge difference, just as long as you aren't getting links from "bad neighborhoods".
I have with my competitor site, I have 100 link from unrelated sites and my competitor only have 5 links 2 links from the same niche. My sites position on SERP is lower the my competitor site. It's look like on SERP link from related niche have more weigh.
I have GOT to disagree with Kev. With Google, Relavence is everything! If you have links from high pr sites that are of similar content to your site, you will see a much higher ranking in the search engine page results. This is why you want to network with sites that are similar to yours and get to know the webmasters.
Thanks for everyone's info. It sheds light on a lot for me. Looks like relevant links are the way to go Thank You
Absolutely correct. Relevancy has nothing to do with Google's PR calculation. But relevancy DOES play a big role in how your inbound links help you rank for a particular keyword phrase.
both will play considerable role in your rankings... pr 5 links is always helpful and most of the time you never able to get pr5+ links from same business untill u spend lots of $$.. and getting link from pr2 with relevant site will improve your traffic and position both.. pr5+ link will help to get higher page rank .
In terms of PR, relevancy is not important at all. Relevancy will certainly help you in SERP. If your concern is on PR, try to get as many high PR backlinks as possible.
I try to go for BOTH: getting High PR links AND relevant "Anchor Text" links. Your link building strategy should be diversified........NEVER turn down a free PR 5 (or higher) do follow link -- unless its a porn or spam site.
PR isn't affected by relevancy. These days, any reputable SEO expert will tell you that getting a large number of high quality backlinks from relevant websites is the key to getting good search engine rankings. You must still do a reasonably good job of on-page optimization to put your web pages into the best possible light, but getting good backlinks is what will really move your website to the top of the search engine rankings.
