My website is ranking high in the US but not in the UK why can this be?

It is hosted in the UK, its's a (dot)com domain.

Not sure what else effects it. It does have alot of us websites linking to it.

    any help would be great.

(I'm sure this might not be the case, but...) Is it using American English or British English? Also, be careful of the keywords you choose, the ones we use in the US may not be searched for at all over there...or could be entirely different. You might be targeting US-based keywords.

    Here are the possible issues:

    1) Your website is .com instead of .co.uk. This is telling Google that you are targeting either the US market or an international market. A .co.uk would give you a rankings boost on google.co.uk

    2) You may not have enough backlinks from websites hosted in the UK. If most of your backlinks are from US based websites, Google is assuming you target the UK market. It may also help to get links from pages that mention the UK or that have uk in their url. Some people think that where the domain is registered may affect things too.

    3) You may not have enough UK related content on your website to convince Google that you are targeting the UK. That includes a UK street address on your website.

    4) You might not have set your target country in Google Webmaster Tools.

The biggest factor is UK based links though. So make a point of getting more links from UK forums, blogs, websites, etc.

I would agree with vansterdam and say set your Google Webmaster Tools setting to target UK. And also why didn't you get a .co.uk domain name?

Just like mentioned above, the google webmaster tools should fix it and get backlinks from .co.uk domains to rank higher in the uk.

vansterdam is correct on all counts...

A .co.uk TLD hosted in UK has the best chance of ranking well in Google.co.uk. Likewise, a non-country specific TLD like a .com hosted in the US has the best chance of ranking well in Google.com. These are the ideal domain/hosting configurations for each Google.

It's not clear from your post whether you want to rank primarily in Google.co.uk or if you want to rank well in both. It will likely be very difficult (without LOTS of links from both US and .co.uk domains) to rank well in both Google.com and Google.co.uk. If you want to rank in both then I would, however, suggest NOT setting the geo-targetting setting in Google's WMT. Let Google figure that out themselves.

If you primarily care about ranking well in Google.co.uk because your targetted audience is almost exclusively in the UK, then by all means set your WMT geo-targeting to UK, get more links from other sites that rank well in Google.co.uk, and possibly consider changing domains from .com to .co.uk at some point.

This has been my experience too. Links from the targeted geographic area seem to be very important.

I would agree with vansterdam... try to focus on UK targetd keywords and post your website details in UK local search engines which will give you better backlinks. Also you can concentrate on classifides.
