Warning to domain owners using Yahoo!

OK, here's the deal: If you have a domain registered with yahoo, you probably only registered because they had a sweet deal in the beginning giving you a good price.

As some of you may know, they increase the price for the 2nd year dramatically ($34.95 US), and you are auto-renewed if you don't cancel.

So far, it's not too bad, since you can just transfer a week or two before it expires. Right? WRONG!

Yahoo will register your 2nd year about 2 weeks before the domain expires!!! They say that this is a service for you, so that your domain doesn't expire on you all of a sudden, but it's actually a tactic for them to rip you off.

So, if any of you have yahoo domains, consider switching about a month before the domain expires. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Some call that a rip off while others indeed call it a service. You'd be shocked
how many people do want their domains autorenewed to not let them expire.

I guess one problem is some registrars (which Yahoo! isn't) don't make it clear
necessarily how autorenew works, although most (if not all) do allow users to
turn it off. I guess Yahoo! doesn't?

So far, Go Daddy's the only one I know that autorenews on the day the name
will expire. Others autorenew before for a variety of reasons, which I guess I
won't have to state since people will think I'm BS'ing anyway.

Still, it's kinda good to let others know to cancel or transfer before autorenew
does take effect. But the same applies to whoever you're using, and also if its
    autorenew is also turned on.

Don't assume autorenew works when the domain expires. Be sure to ask your
provider about that if you still want to use it.

yes, this can be called a crape, since they took $34.95 for the renewals. We can renew 4-5 domains by $34.95 at other registrars.

That's really very high price for the renewal even you're buying domain @ $0.99 for the first year! however when you read Yahoo TOS it clearly states "prices charged may be changed without notice".

    4.5 Price Changes
Upon renewal, as provided in Section 5.1, the prices charged may be changed without notice to the then prevailing price for the Services.

There are more detail specification about the changes in prices in their TOS.

While signing up a service, you can understand how much it is important to read the TOS thoroughly.
