SEO will not become obsolete. As long as there are web pages and search engines that use algorithms to rank URLs, there will be a need for SEO.

Some SEO techniques will never change and likely always be valid even with Google. These are the techniques that most people affectionately call "white hat" SEO. If you write good content and grow links naturally (allowing other sites to decide when/how to link to you) rather than 'farming' links yourself for your site, it is a better long term strategy. These types of links are almost never the target of Google anti-spam algorithm changes. Yes this takes a LOT longer to build up rankings, but it will out last any of the quick and dirty spam techniques used by most SEOs today once you do start ranking well 1, 2, 3 years down the road.

The SEO techniques that will continue to be rendered obsolete are those that are used by SEOs to 'farm' links themselves for their sites rather than waiting on the links to come naturally... It's this abuse by SEOs of things like directory submissions, article submissions, blog comment spamming, forum signature link spamming, paid links, and whatever else becomes the flavor of the day where SEOs try to 'beat the system' to make a quick buck that will always be the target of Google's anti-spam algorithm changes... and unfortunately, that will never change.

I'm not saying either is right or wrong... I think they both have their place. But it is right IMO that those that grow links naturally by building good content and waiting on other sites to promote them get rewarded over the long haul... just as I think it is right that those sites that abuse the system and farm links unnaturally get penalized by algorithm changes once the abuse becomes intolerable by Google.

If you're going to 'farm' links using techniques like blog comment spamming, directory submissions, etc. then do it knowing full well that all of your efforts might be rendered null and void by the next algo change. This is fine for disposable affiliate sites or porn sites or whatever where you want to make a quick buck. If your site gets banned just know that you're likely facing starting over from scratch or suffering through some penalty period or having all of your inbounds devalued at some point by an algo change. It's the cost of doing business.

But don't whine about it. It's kind of like a drug dealer bitching cuz a cop busted him for selling cocaine and now he can't feed his family. It's not the cop's fault. They are doing their job enforcing the law. It's not the legal systems' fault for creating the law in the first place. They do it to protect the general community at large. So it is w/ Google changing their algo to protect their users from spammers ruling the SERPs.

However, if you're in it for the long haul and trying to build a brand or a site you want to be around for years and years, I'd suggest you go easier on the spam techniques for farming links and concentrate more on good content generation and building a brand which in itself will bring you links.

Different SEO strokes for different SEO folks (and situations)!

As long as people keep searching on internet search engine will be exits so SEO will also be there till then. The way we are doing SEO may change, the techologies may be well developed but the SEO will never become worthless.

Well yeah, there will always be SEO, but it seems to be turning more automated and based off of individual searcher's activity- not so much on any practices you use for your site.
