need help with Google Hosted Domain

Discussion in 'Google' started by driven, Jul 9, 2006.

Is there anyone here who has their own Google Hosted Gmail account https://www.google.com/hosted ?

    Because I have a question.

I was trying to setup my DNS and MX records to make sure that my domain points to Google's Gmail hosted service. However, I see that i can't set it up if I'm already using the domain for my website. Is this correct?

I'm using Godaddy if you need to know.

    Thanks.

There should be a MX record in Google panel which you need to point to. I have seen friends who did it without any problems...

I also set it.. in fact if you are using godaddy then google provides instructions for setting it up..

One thing, if you are already using some third party DNS server (instead) of godaddy DNS server, then you may not see that option in godaddy DNS panel.. so to see the MX settings again..just set your domain to DEFAULT DNS (parking page).. (just for some time) and change your MX setting.. then again you can set up your correct DNS. I hope I am making sense.

I am telling you this because I also had similar problem with it..but now its working fine for me.. if you need any more help info..just pm me..

Oh...I think I get it now. So you are saying that I should reset my DNS to parked. Wait a few hours and then it'll allow me to go in and change the settings as directed by Google's instruction for Godaddy?

I was able to go in and edit my MX records. However, in the Gmail hosted instructions, it gives instructions to edit the MX records up to Priority Values of 60 and 70.

But in Godaddy's panel, it only allows Priority Value to go up to 50. Do I ignore 60 and 70?

Also, once I'm done with editing the MX records, I can go back and edit my nameservers and put them back to what they were supposed to be, right?

    thanks.

If your domain name is hosted on Godaddy server they should be able to set the MX setting to google hosted email. Your hosting provider should be able to change that for you.

I called Godaddy and they said that I had to call my hosting company to get it changed. Somehow, I'm just not surprised that they gave me this response. I'll have to email my hosting company now

No. Hosting company cannot do anything about changing MX records. MX records are changed at your DNS provider.

If you are using DNS of godaddy, then you have to change it at godaddy. If you are using DNS of some other host (like your hosting company), then you have to ASK THEM to change it to point to what google ask for.

    I hope that helps.

I don’t think it takes that much of time. After changing the MX records my account status changed to active within 6hrs.
