I've read in many places that they are given far less weight than they used to, probably for spamming reasons.

I think that this topic was so highly commented that there is nothing more to add. And the answer is that noone really knows if those domains have more 'power' than the regular one.
You could read about it in Google Patent but it wasn't anything that surely exists.
If you are wondering - ask Google ;)

.edu or .gov are not treated any differently than other domains
    matt cutts already stated this

Google do place EDU in a higher class of importance than the average TLDs..

To answer your question simply, yes, .EDU's are more important.

    :)

    +rep.. Perfect answer. ^^
A link from a related PR-5 .edu/.gov will pass the exact same juice as a link from a related PR-5 .com/.net/.org or .info

    Absolutely incorrect answer ^^

EDU is global. Its used in the US and also used in the UK and also in Australia. Could you be reffering to a EU domain?

I might not be correct, though, I believe to get an EDU domain you need permission from the education department of your country/state. I may not be right though.

I was reading some months ago about the fact that getting links from .edu, .gov etc it is not that important at it was some years ago. It is as important as you would get a link from a high ranked website .com.

i've come across people that says link from those domains are worth more because google see them as important. If you notice those sites are important sites, in which google will then give them a high page rank, not because of the domain but beacause of the quality of the content on the site... So it think not

Yes, EDU links provide good reputation value, although Google would not admit it publicly.

TylerDee, TX: Are .gov and .edu back links still considered more "link juice" than the common back link?

Matt Cutts: This is a common misconception--you don't get any PageRank boost from having an .edu link or .gov link automatically.
If you get an .edu link and no one is linking to that .edu page, you're not going to get any PageRank at all because that .edu page doesn't have any PageRank.

JohnMu: We generally treat all links the same - be it from .gov or .edu or .info sites.

Please read the above again, and again, and again. Now - the only thing they have said there is that they neither confirm nor deny that edu and gov links are providing better value. This citation us completely useless and does not prove anything besides the fact, that it does not prove anything.

lol.. dunno about you, but I don't need to read it again, and again, and again. I had no problem understanding it the first time.

Not sure what sort of proof you are after, but you obviously have a hard time believing it when Google say it. so there is not much more I can add..
