    Hello all,

My name is David Hurley and I found your forum while researching some other stuff.

I'm glad I took the time to join and am looking forward to joining in the give-and-take.

As I mentioned in the title, I'm from Britain and live in Hiroshima, Japan. Actually, I've lived in Hiroshima for all but three years since the summer of 1990...

I now work as a freelance English instructor and language consultant.

I also run several websites including one that sells Japanese games and other gear, and another in the Internet marketing market, focusing on helping folks get started and also on article writing services.

Anyway, I look forward to learning some new skills and contributing to the forum.

    Best wishes,

    David Hurley:)

    Hi wrankin and AMac08,

    Thanks for the welcome.

Those were quick responses! Hope this forum is always this active!

AMac08 - The funny thing is that I have lived here so long now that the "spectacular" and exotic all seem sort of normal! On the other hand, I really appreciate Britain when I go back, as I did just a couple of weeks ago. It is a small world - I was in Yorkshire for some of the time - Leeds, Wakefield and Barnsley!

    David thats cool.

I actually work in Barnsley. Its just undergone some big re-development (government funding) and I am lucky to be in a nice block of new offices. With the greatest respect to the city though, it looks like it needed a lick of paint!

I actually live in Sheffield though.

Do you nejoy living in Japan?

Passed through Sheffield on a crowded Saturday afternoon train on our way to the Peak District a couple of weeks ago. Standing all the way to Derby (only an hour so no sweat, and I was standing in the refreshments carriage - so very enjoyable actually!!)...

A week later we were in Barnsley for lunch at a traditional fish and chip cafe in the city centre. Forget its name, but it was a fine lunch!

Yes, I really enjoy living in Japan. Life got a lot easier when I started working for myself, but even before that I enjoyed it. Now though, I get to cherry pick my classes and only teach who I want!

David, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal then working for yourself!

They do a mean fish and chips in Barnsley, but not so much Sheffield! You have to go a long way to find a decent chippy there.

    Thanks for the welcome, everybody!

    Hi mankind777,

Well, I like what I see so far and I am impressed with the amount of traffic it gets. Yep, I plan to hang around and gradually get more involved.

    To: AMac08

"David, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal then working for yourself! "

Yes, it is! Really, I do three things:

    1. English teaching and consulting
    2. Selling Japanese games, manga and other gear on my website
    3. Affiliate marketing and article writing in the IM field

The first one gets me out into the world dealing with people face to face.

The second one brings in a nice supplementary income, but I have to buy, pack and post goods every time I receive orders - hard work!!

The third one is under development, but happily now beginning to earn me money and not cost me money! It is part of a long term plan to build up a business that is not dependent on location, or on having to pack and post orders! I want to have a business that I can take with me whenever I choose to move elsewhere sometime in the future...

I guess, though, that wherever I might end up, I will always to some English teaching work as it is a great way to get out and meet people (and earn bread and butter), but I don't want to have to rely on it as my sole source of income.

    Cheers for now,

    DH
