Just to add to my original post - I would recommend blip.fm. If you like music, every time you play a song it becomes a tweet, a good way to hook up with people with the same tastes in music = more followers.

I unfollowed someone who has a blog I like because they kept doing this - I like his blog posts in his 'niche' - I don't want to know what song he's playing every four minutes.

I think the key to using Twitter is to not over do it. You'll see people on there that just Tweet too much using proverbs and famous quotes. This does get annoying especially when all the tweets in your Twitter inbox are from the same person.

Using the search function is a great way to get followers that are in your niche. Just type your keywords into the search entry at the top and then follow people that you find in that niche. 9 times out of 10 they will follow you back.

You can also use a service called Twubble. This will look at you current followers and suggest other people you may want to follow that have the same interests as you.

A great application to use is TweetDeck. This sorts through and organizes your tweets into neat relevant columns and also has a built in tool to shorten your URLs.

Just as you have hopefully optimized your keywords for your niche, so you should optimize your Twitter network. You don't want 1,000s of followers unrelated to your niche - you're better off with fewer folks that are really following you because they like your content.

In other words, don't try to trick Twitter. Use it as intended for best results.

I don't get the whole twitter craze but certainly people are profiting from it. I prefer to blog more twitter less but maybe that's why I'm not making $100 thousand a year.

If it is your twitter, how do you spam...if they do not like what you have to say, then they can just
unfollow, I just do not unstand how you can spam...there is this one dude, i swear he is twitting
urls like every 15 minutes, whats wrong with that, i can just as easily not follow him if I did not
want to see what he was sending...

Two things. One, who has time to be "tweeting" all day long, and two, do site visitors from Twitter really buy? Personally, I think Twitter traffic is very much like social bookmarking traffic: highly unresponsive.

I've never really found Twitter all that useful for a marketing standpoint. Hell, I've never liked it from a social aspect either.

Don't be annoying. In other words: don't talk too much about yourself; don't promote your own sites/blogs/products/services all the time; don't update your status 20 times/hour.

Be nice to others. Retweet their messages when you feel they can be interesting or valuable to your followers. Share useful links.

Know your audience and give it what it wants. For instance, if you'd like to promote a celeb site, look for twitterers who are interested in celebs and follow them. A few of them will likely reciprocate. Then you can share links to interesting celeb quotes, news, pics and whatnot. From time to time (say, once every 20 tweets), you drop a link to your own site. Rinse and repeat.

Upload a nice, appropriate avatar. And don't forget to fill your profile. A blank profile reduces your chances of being followed.

    Good luck!

The quality of the messages that you send out is an important factor in retaining your following, as well as growing one.

You need to balance entertaining, fun and useful posts with promotional ones.

What you want to do is build a relationship with your followers so that they trust your recommendations, are eager to explore your websites and review your products, but also simply enjoy being on your list, because your posts are interesting and entertaining.
