It should be a matter of ALL the posts from the member, though I reckon there are at least a few forums out there where older posts are not changed when a sig is changed (which, IMHO, would be really cool!)

The reason these can matter is that when a thread is bumped that you posted in three years ago your new sig will show up. Likewise, when someone links to an older thread it once again seems to be current, or in that case, old (which is good ~ though I don't think it'll fool a bot).

If you are wanting things current and are trying to get the word out, I'd look at average post count rather then total post count. A guy with 100 posts that's been on the forum for 4 days may offer better results then someone with 100 posts that's been around for 15 years ;) Though, there is risk in that, mega-posters get banned quickly... or at least can.

An interesting and useful post. I can understand why - for seo backlink purposes - it is better to have posts at the top of the page. For purely SEo purposes, why is a 1 liner a bad think - does Google pay less attention to posts with 1 line or is this because you won't get the traffic?

    Also,

How can Google tell what pr your posts have? Do your posts have pr? Does Google pay attention to wheterh people have added to your reputation/given postitive karma etc?

One of the biggest perks of a sig link that is related to the forum the member is posting on is because HUMANS care (not bots). So Google could care less about the quality of the post in many cases (though, a good content post WILL pull in better SERP).

How can Google tell what pr your posts have?
They spider them... if your post/thread has PR Google certainly notices!

    Do your posts have pr?
I dunno... some likely do. I never checked. However, I have posted in a few threads with PR, so I'm sure those at least do. As for which ones *shrug*

Does Google pay attention to wheterh people have added to your reputation/given postitive karma etc?
No, but again, people certainly do!

In the end its all about TRAFFIC! A well placed signature link will pull in both human traffic directy, and indirect traffic through search engine spiders.

Its only all about cheap if you are trying to get a page indexed.

It's still about quality! A poster that has something to say will give a heck of a lot more traffic then one that just posts one liners in the BST section.

That would be cool, but honestly there are better threads out there (even by me) ;)

For instance, Forum Link Building tips (it's not just your signiture!) is a better thread on the subject then this one, as it tells you how to post to make the most from forum link building. This thread is just a supplement to that one...
