Yes, these things all work. One other thing that people sometimes don't realize is that those highly sought after .edu links can be achieved without spamming educational sites. Look for educational institutions (colleges, universities) that have blogs or open forums - sometimes they will have forums open to people who are considering attending there, or who knew someone who attended there. And sometimes the professors will have their own popular blogs where you can place comments as someone outside the university. Edu links pass a lot of power to a website and will increase your page rank fast. It's not necessary to spam to get edu links, you just have to search around and find good places where you can obtain a genuine backlink, not a spammy link.

Yeah those cheesy comments on my blog just to get a backlinks are really annoying and I reject most of them.

Not sure if this is white hat enough for you, but I have had very good success with Linkvana and generate enough natural one way backlinks to get tons of more targeted traffic. You can check it out in my signature if you are interested. Will cost some money, but I got that back my first month, so well worth my time and money.

one word. Autoblogging. Done right, it's as white hat as any other method. Quality blogs are quality blogs HOWEVER the content is created.
