So how would you promote a free piece of software using SEM? I have no intention to sell it, but I want to make some sort of "public awareness". What would you recommend to start with ?
I would write articles and submit them to article directories. If there were something particularly unique about it I would publish some press releases too. If it's a small niche, getting top search engine rankings wouldn't be hard so I'd recommend SEO as well.

Theres a cool little trick you could use to promoting software using SEO. I would suggest you start by building an SEO friendly website and since your promoting a software you can submit it to software directories, they will give you a backlink and most have high pr and they allow anchor text. This is called link baiting, I would go into detail with it but you can find a video on youtube.
