What kind of website is it? It depends on lot of things actually. If you have a custom coded site, you have to code it.

Actually many cms and blog software have rss feed integrated .
Manually editing rss is not recommended .

Feed43 can help you create an RSS feed for a website that doesn't already have them built in.

If you aren't already, consider moving the site to a CMS like WordPress and it will probably save you a lot of time sorting out similar issues in the future.

I highly recommend building your site in regular html and manually creating a feed page. It takes about five minutes to set up, and then each time you update your site, you simply take a minute or two to create a new entry for your feed. Then you can ping pingomatic or pingoat and notify the engines that you've updated your site for fast indexing of your new content. With Wordpress this is built in, but Wordpress is an unstable platform and it's always a good idea to mix up your sites for security purposes - WP blogs are easiliy hacked, spam can be a hassle to manage, etc. With an html site and its own feed your site basically functions like a hybrid - both a regular site and a blog. Google really loves blogs these days so a feed is really a must on any site.
