I have no idea what is happening here; one of the sites I work on I do the SEO for. Admittedly in the last week I have done very little as I have been tied up with other stuff, but I have done a daily check of their serps for their main keywords, and their principal keyword has had this result: Sunday: 3rd Monday: 7th Tuesday: 5th Wednesday: 7th Thursday: 5th Friday: 3rd Saturday: 5th Today: 3rd I could probably understand yo-yoing 1 or two places either way, but jumping around this much is crazy - any ideas why the site would be doing this - I know downward movement can be caused by competitor activity, but I have been doing nothing myself to spark the upward activity....anybody got a clue?
It would be better if you give us a keyword you are tracking for your site, then we can help you out with the matter.
Some of my sites jumped many places in this week. From page one to page four and even more. I have also seen lot of SERP changes.
whats really strange is the site has been consistently at 8th for over a month - just makes the adwords management a real pain - if they are third, they dont really want to shell out on adwords, but if they are 7th it is a good idea to keep the campaign going....
this is called the google dance. basicly it means that google is updating its database and recalculating serps alot!
thanks for the feedback peeps - I know about the Google dance, but never seen it jigging around like this since the infamouse Florida update a few years back. Anywasy, I found another couple of threads on the boards which seem to show that I am getting off lightly, some established sites are being dumped from #1 to third page and back again hourly...wtf is the big G up to now then? Seriously, they are damaging their own adwords revenue stream here - my client is so confused he has suspended all ads to save duplication when his site ranks well, and I imagine quite a few others are doing the same, so Google has really shot themselves in the foot here.....ah well, who knows, maybe tomorrow it will stabilise....or not...
We've been seeing this as well. On one site we're watching we saw the site change positions (three different ones in the span of a phone call while hitting Refresh. I'm still seeing movement (as I'm sure are you). Hopefully it's end soon. Dave
I have a 5 week old UK site that was ranking well, "now" the positions are all over the place, we were number 2 for the main keyword phrase which is in fact the domain name.. now today we were number 5, then an hour later number 5 and 6.. the rest of the other 30 indexed pages are in a real mess.. some have vanished and some have lost about 5-20 places.... I am hoping this is the results of a dance.... the other thing is could it be because 5 or 6 days ago I added 40 new pages? Do "new" sites usually go through some kind of stabilization dance such as this? Regards David
It happens all the time. Nothing unusual there. Probably half of the 68 keywords I am currently tracking change rankings daily.
