Is WordPress really a CMS ?

I've always thought that Joomla should be used for a CMS and WordPress should be used for a blog, but I've seen others say that WordPress is a great CMS - is this really the case ?

I don't think WordPress is as powerful as Joomla, but maybe I have it wrong (I have very limited WordPress experience)

Joomla is 100001 times more powerful and better than Wordpress.

    You are right.
Wordpress is only for small websites for blogs basically. :D

Wordpress can be used as a content management system if the content being managed is not extensive. For extensive content, there are far better content management systems available.

As a long time Joomla builder i love the application, but find myself using wordpress more and more. It really depends on what you need out of the site. If you need a deep CMS then Joomla is the answer. I have also been finding that google seems to like wordpress better (at least for newer sites).

Yes, I've always used Joomla, but I need to create a really simple site (news, podcast, gallery, links, iframe to external site .... or maybe just a link to the external site). I know the site will never be more than this, so that's why I'm thinking of using WordPress instead of Joomla.

If its the ability to create, edit, delete, publish ANY content types, Joomla is more flexible than Wordpress which has two content types (posts, pages). For example, Drupal and Joomla can use the Content Construction Kit (CCK) to build different content types. With Wordpress you likely have to hack your way in making it work. Wordpress is good at doing blogs. Joomla/Drupal can do much more.

I think that Joomla and Drupal are better for websites with many members.
They offer better control over the contributors to your content.
Wordpress is better for "news" blogs, with often fresh content.

Great question to get the joomal fans out of the wood work.....

using joomla is like taking a sledgehammer to a peanut.. it is simply overkill

most people do not have large sites so WP is fine and is a great CMS, it will meet all your needs as your site expands...

"all" your needs might be an overstatement, but the site I have in mind will probably never need extra functionality in the future.

wordpress is much more than a blogging software.
    http://www.skynetresearch.com

It can be used as a very, very powerful cms, and best of all it is very lightweight. It is not just for "small" websites, lol.

However, this is a battle that will never be one. Both wordpress and joomla have their positives, but they both have their faults as well. Neither one is an end all solution.

WordPress is actually blogging software. You can create you blogging site with the help of WordPress. For a truly CMS based site one should rather go for Joomla… :)

Are you serious? Joomla is total ass compared to Wordpress. It's a resource intensive hog.

Wordpress is 1000x more flexible and extensible than Joomla, not to mention it runs better and faster and doesn't give off those ugly URL's

It may take some work to get it to be a CMS, but with the custom fields, and the ability to design different layouts per category it makes it a winner.

Is WordPress really a CMS ?
    Yes, of course.
What is better - Joomla or WP?
It depends of what are you going to do.
I prefer WordPress because of its flexibility and a number of different plugins which extend its functionality

I agree that Joomla is a deeper CMS. It has a much steeper learning curve though.

Wordpress just gets better and better. It's great for SEO and getting indexed fast. There are a few Wordpress plugins that work well to eliminate the entire blogging portion of the site and use it just as a stripped-down CMS. You can create static pages and overall it's simple. The community is a whole lot more enthusiastic too.

It does still look bloggy and even with the Magazine style Wordpress themes still looks like Wordpress. In the future Wordpress will probably be everyone's CMS of choice but right now Joomla is better at building the beefy sites.

For about 2 years now ive read about, looked into using and reconsidered joomla, ive been doing that today aswell and for some reason i keep getting pulled back to wordpress.

One way i can see wordpress possibly going in the future too is for it to branch out into 2 seperate versions, i think wordpress may reach a point where they will break it into the blog version and the full on CMS version so that for those wanting a blog its there and for those wanting more they could have the all in one version that goes beyond the blog.
