I wonder how exactly this works? Let's say I'm mostly interested in basketball and I visit websites in this niche on a daily basis, then one day I decide to visit a website about dogs. Will this website display ads related to basketball now? Or is it still gonna display the related DOGS ads, but with an added spice of my interests. What will this be? Dogs that play basketball?

They sure could have explained a little bit more on what this feature does EXACTLY.

One of my websites is also in very well paying niche.

So instead of showing relevent ads to my website, now Google will show whatever the user was searching before. Or something like that.

And instead of 1$ clicks i will get .01c and .10c clicks.

Not good in my book. We will have to see it in real world but i think that it will not be good.

You can't turn it totally off. Just check your adsense My Account. There is an option there, still unclear what exactly does.

Can I opt out of interest-based advertising for my site?

You can opt out of showing ads that are based on user interest categories (e.g. 'sports enthusiasts'). In turn, Google will not use visitation information from your sites to help create interest categories. However, you cannot opt out of showing ads to users based on their previous interactions with the advertiser, such as visits to an advertiser's website.

To opt out of ads based on user interest categories:

    1. Sign in to your AdSense account.
    2. Visit your My Account tab.
    3. Go to the Account Settings page.
    4. In the Interest-based Ads Preference section, click edit.
    5. Select the button marked Do not show ads based on user interest categories and save your changes.

Please keep in mind that by opting out, you'll decrease the number of ads competing to appear on your website, which may decrease your potential earnings.

there is this option in adsense account:
Set your preference for interest-based ads.

Show ads based on user interest categories. Visitation information from my sites may be used to help create interest categories.
    or
Do not show ads based on user interest categories. Visitation information from my sites will not be used to help create interest categories.

I guess this means that we can either enable or disable this feature.

So overall, will this new feature benefit the adsense publisher or not?
Btw, we have this in our PP and i think it still covers this new kind of advertising by adsense, you are free to copy it if you want...

No you can't disable it. The Adsense My Account option is for USE OR NOT info from YOUR website to show to OTHER WEBSITES.

It doesn't apply for ads shown in your website.

I guess we will know after 1-2 months or so. Right now we are only guessing but i think that high paying niches will be dead.

    IMHO.

Rightly said. High paying niche site owners may be affected by this change.

    According to this:
    https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=140378&topic=20310

It says users can edit their list of interest categories thru Ads preference Manager.
But how do they access this setting? I doubt even most of the end users will be aware of this (until they read the privacy policy statements in sites they visit)

WRONG...you CAN opt out of showing ads based on user interest categories.

I have already opted out for the following reasons (not all-inclusive):

Multiple people using the same computer.

If a person is a "sports enthusiast" and visits a non-sports site, he's probably in the "mood" of the site he's visiting, and sports ads may not be as targeted as the ads that show up for the particular site he is on.

Google, as a third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on our website.
    # Google's use of the DART cookie enables it to serve ads to our users based on their visit to our sites and other sites on the Internet.
    # Users may opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the

that is the link you should add

    Opt out as WHAT ?

As Adsense Publisher, you can't. The only thing you can do is disable your websites information, not what is shown to your website

As a User, i have no idea and most users don't.

I'm staying opted out for now. They've done some comprehensive studies probably but human nature is human nature. If I go to a site on a particular topic, that's the topic that is going to be in the forefront of my mind and the topic of which I will visit related sites for. I don't need my interests "tracked" for that.

Plus, when people start seeing the same ads showing up wherever they go, they are going to get blind to them even more (and think that they are being followed lol). When they get to my sites then, there will hopefully be a better chance of different ads, which will be related to their INTEREST AT THE MOMENT (NOT a GENERAL interest of theirs) Thus, I may see better results by opting out.

Opt out as PUBLISHER...read your Adsense Account Settings before saying you can't disable what is shown. My settings now say:

Please take the time to read and understand what that means.

Show ads based on user-interest categories. Visit information from my sites may be used to help create interest categories.

Do not show ads that are based on user-interest categories. Visit information from my sites will not be used to help create interest categories.

It means that YOUR website(s) will not provide information of user behavior.

But YOUR websites will still display ads with the new interest-based data.
