Read the Sand box section first. That way you can know how to stay out of it. You don't want to work hard getting links only to be penalized.

You don't need to buy any books as teckinik suggested. Since seo is constantly changing, most seo books are out of date by the time they are published. You should find a bunch of good seo tutorials or blogs to read. Here are some good sites to check out: http://www.seobook.com/ http://www.seomoz.org/ http://www.jimwestergren.com/ Once you start to learn some stuff, start participating in 2 or 3 seo forums. Read lots of posts and ask questions. Keep in mind that with seo, a lot of what you read may be opinions or theories. It may not be all 100% true. Try their suggestions, but monitor its effectiveness for yourself. What works for one website might not work so well for another. When you actually start doing seo, I recommend you start with an unimportant website that you can afford to make mistakes with. Only start with a more important website once you are more comfortable with seo and you know what to avoid. Good luck.

I've been thinking about doing some free videos. I'm just not sure there is really a demand for that though. I personally learned a ton by just reading here. There are some other great links out there. I think for a lot of SEO stuff, you do need at least basic web development experience. If you aren't familiar with that, you will have problems really succeeding. I'd recommend reading up on HTML just a little bit before getting started if you aren't familiar with it already.
There is a lot of great resources that have been submitted. I have to agree with sticking with the main blogs that have been suggested. There is a post in seomoz.org/articles there are a lot of different things that you can learn there for free or cheap. Good Luck it is a long road.

I have also found a good way to learn about SEO is by visiting a competitor's site and looking at how they designed the page (look for keywords, description, title tags etc and how their placed) and how relevant to the topic they are and just take it from there. Alot of the link already suggested are great to learn new tip and techniques
You can not learn SEO just reading ebooks or articles, you have to implement the techniques as well..
Reading only not help you. You should try it out what you have learned in SEO so you can correct it yourself.
You first create one blog site from blogger.com. Read lots of blogs and threads from DP. Implement and test it what you have learned from blogs and threads.
