A few moments ago I received an email from the Google Checkout team: Here it is: If you follow the links to get more information, you'll see that with the recent updates to their fee scheme, Google Checkout becomes a Paypal mirror. In addition to the regular transaction fees that match Paypal now, if buyer is from a different country than you, then another 1% is added to the total transaction fee. Oh and you'll have to pay chargeback fees in the unfortunate event of a reversed transaction that you won't be able to fight for and win the case. How nice is that? So should I continue to be bothered about convincing my customers to pay through Google instead of Paypal? I'm not too sure now.
Try to convince them that saving money on credit card processing rates becoming how much important these days?
Interesting news, thanks for sharing dude However, I never had any experience with Google Checkout though...
On 5 May 2009, Google Checkout's transaction processing fees will be changing from 1.5% plus £0.15 per transaction to a "new tiered pricing structure", where the rates will vary depending on the amount of your monthly sales processed through Checkout. That means: Less than £1500 in sales: 3.4% + £0.20 £1500 - £5999.99 in sales: 2.9% + £0.20 £6000 - £14999.99 in sales: 2.4% + £0.20 £15000 - £54999.99 in sales: 1.9% + £0.20 £55000 or more in sales: 1.4% + £0.20
And I was eagerly waiting for google checkout !! Thanks for sharing the information...mate. I was of the opinion that in order to challenge the monopoly of PP in this segment, big g would price its fees very competitively.... Regards, RightMan
Same story here, RightMan. I've been investing time and effort into implementing Google Checkout into my applications, and been working with customers to get them used to it as a paypal replacement. Used to be free once, then reasonably priced, now matching Paypal in terms of fees, and still better at supporting more countries. Oh well...
I did wonder why they removed the free option. Even a small amount of payment can be harsh for starting netreprenuers.
discontinuing the offset against adwords is particularly annoying, and I can't see why they're doing this - it can't be because they've got a sufficient customer base to not feel the need for some incentive to lure away from PayPal surely? I've got sites that offer both and the proportion of customers that use Google checkout in preference to PayPal is tiny.
Good point, I certainly don't feel like their customer database has grown big enough for Google to be prepared to enforce rules as the risk of losing them to Paypal is still high in my opinion. I used to regard them as a Paypal replacement on the long run but it looks like Google Checkout might have to stay as an alternative payment there where Paypal is unavailable.
