Trying to have my Wordpress Blog verified by Webmaster Tools.

This should be straightforward.... but bare with me as I'm gradually taking off the training wheels for the most part.

I'm attempting to verify my site with Webmaster Tools through the method suggested http://thepursuitofalife.com/verifying-wordpresscom-sites-with-google-webmaster-tools/

However, this isn't working for me as my url appears as:
    www.widgets.com/google4f645e3adsdaa48g3a41zhtml
    rather than
    www.widgets.com/google4f645e3adsdaa48g3a41z.html

    Notice the .html issue above?

Anyone have any suggestions on where I am going wrong.
    Cheers

Yeh. It's been frustrating to get this solved. Read a lot around the topic of Wordpress/Webmaster Tool verification and it seems like my issue is the .html being stripped off the domain. I haven't got a notice how to fix this unfortunately :(

Can't you also insert a special meta tag in the file for validation? Why not try that?
