Some Google Questions

    Hi gang-

Looking for some opinions. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get my site moved up for a couple of terms that constantly hover around page one but just don't stick up there for long. They are both three word phrases, and both are pretty competitive.

Question 1: if I focus on just anchor text in links for those two keywords, will this help me the most? Or, will it be best to spread out my google linking to other search phrases? I'm not sure if Google frowns on all anchor text pointing to just two phrases.

Question 2: What can I do on-site to modify how google sees my page? Here is one example in a different business:

My site is www.WrinklesErased.com and I want to rank under "wrinkle cream reviews." What would you change on my site to attack that phrase?

    All opinions welcome.

Sorry but I really don't like the bolding you have done. It looks very spammy and distracts from the actual content. I strongly doubt this will help your rankings. In the past bolding your keyword did help a bit, but I don't think it is as effective now.

The thing that will help your rankings the most is getting more backlinks with that phrase as link anchor text. I don't think you will get penalized if you evenly divide anchor text between 2 phrases (unless it is just the singular & plural of the same phrase). You are much more likely to get penalized if one phrase dominates your link anchor text. It is a good idea to get a wide range of link anchor texts though. It looks more natural and helps rankings across all of those phrases.

Thanks Vansterdam. I killed about half the bolding, and probably will scale it down more. After reading some other forums, it appears people think it has a good affect on SEO, but yeah, I overkilled it. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

It may have a small effect. External links counts for so much more than onpage factors though. Regardless if you bold your keyword or not, you will still likely need better backlinks than the website ranking above you.

Go after some very high page rank backlinks from forums and also hit some edu sites.

Contrary to what some say, it is possible to get high quality edu links without spamming those sites. For instance, some academics/professors keep blogs. Make an intelligent and thoughtful comment on their blogs and often it will be a do follow backlink. Dont' worry about trying to find edu pages that cover your niche. Just getting high page rank edu backlinks can be enough - despite what content might be at the edu site.

Also visit some high page rank webmaster forums - there are loads out there - and put links in your sig file. This can amp up your SERP power very nicely even for very competitive keyphrases.

Thanks a lot Dan. Great info. I'm constantly adding links, but you've got me thinking even more outside the box. Great post.

Just as mentioned above, you should mainly focus on getting more quality relevant backlinks pointing to your website and you should have a different variety of anchor text so that google won't feel suspicious towards your website.

If you want to rank high for "wrinkle cream reviews", you should add this phrase into your site's title and <h1> header, and of course build links with that anchor text.

Just keep on building more backlinks, the higher the PR the better... and will help more if it's from a relevant website.
Keyword density on your website will also help your website rank better a little bit, but don't really expect to sky rocket your ranking by depending on (on-page) optimization only, it's all about backlinks ;)

Thanks WP themes. I agree with you. Are you master at WP web design by any chance? I pump out quite a bit of review/marketing sites and if this is in your wheelhouse, let me know. I can always use more good people to work with.
