We all webmaster are fighting to optimize our website to be ranked on Top# in Google.

But I think Google know how to optimize a website?

Take a look at the Link

I was searching for all search engine. I wonder google is #23 in the result page of google.com :D

We are agreed the Google is the top most SE. But google itself failed to produced it own results.

    Any comments on this ?

It's not that google doesn't know how to optimize, they just choose not to. Everyone already knows about Google. People don't need to find them in a search result to discover them. Meanwhile all of the other search engines are not so lucky. They have no choice but to try to get some Google traffic to improve their market share.

The other reason that Google does not bother with optimizing is that they do not want to encourage seo's by showing them what to do to get rankings. They would have to be extremely careful that they aren't violating their own rules. They don't want to be setting a bad example either.

It just goes to show that you can't get rankings just by having a quality website. You still have to do things like onpage optimization and link building.

Yeah you clearly have too much time on your hands and have no idea how Google works.

You are going to Google to search for "search engine"

Any greater proof of Google's superiority required?

And if they did put their links up first, people would accuse them of manipulating it- " It is their own engine, they'd obviously rank first"

Currently is you check Alexa ranking, Google is on first position.. they can't recommend themselves in their own search engine..

Yeah they aren't going to put themselves number 1 at anything because of what would happen if they did with the backlash. If Google wanted to be number one they would be number one, enough said.

Maybe Google is just trying to Give other Search Engines a chance.

Since you are already there at google search engine doing the search, they would have thought of giving you a chance to see other search engines and determine yourself of how bad others are! (or. in fact why they are the best!)

"Link building"? I think Google's doing OK there, with 297 million backlinks to their home page. :D

BTW, for the term search engine Google scores #29 on MSN, but #2 on Yahoo! Interesting. (Yahoo! is #1 on its own search engine.)

Google doesn't have a content on the home page, it might be the reason they won't come for some searchings on top.

Branded Logo's never engaged in SEO. It may be the reason Google don't care about SEO

Yes Google probably has over 300 million backlinks and growing, but how many of those backlinks use the phrase 'search engine'? Most of them probably just use 'Google' or something similar for anchor text. It just shows how important link anchor text is...on Google and MSN anyway. On Yahoo it seems you can rank very well based on overall domain link weight. Of course you would also have to take into consideration the on page factors...page title, lack of meta tags, insufficient page text, lack of headers, and so on.
