The best possible way to promote your site is to buy advertisements on Google, Yahoo or Facebook. But this can cost you a lot of money! There are many ways for free promotion and marketing techniques on this forum. Feel free to browse little more!
Write articles that relate to your site's theme and submit to free article directories like EzineArticles.com, GoArticles.com Include your resource box back to your site. traffic and backlinks is sure to come your way
Try to participate in different dofollow forums related to your site. Build a good reputation in each community in order to be known and get trusted as well. This would be a great start mate..just continue postings and promoting appropriately and patiently.. rest assured you'll gonna have positive outcome later.
use existing social media like facebook and myspace send emails to all your IM friends. press release get some paid reviews on entertainment/funny blogs
creating the buzz for such sites just before they go live is done via publishing press releases on sites and blogs that are considered to have great authority among readers...do some search and find out which these sites are for your niche... and here's the bad news...once you find these sites you'll have to do a good job at writing the press releases so that the site owners accept your request to post it there...ah, and you'll have to spend some money, I guess you are familiar with the saying, "there's no free lunch in life"

- you could consider some sort of contest - here's some good tips you might want to check out - and you might want to put some info on "who is using" or "how many people have been using this" (or something to make it look that there's people using that thing...)
As mentioned above use articles to create buzz, but not just one or two. Write till your fingers bleed. You can also offer some free information item and drive them to a landing where you can cature information and continue to drive them to your site over time.
Write (or have someone write) a press release tying your site's story to current events or what's popular in the news, and then get in touch with newspapers, radio, etc. to get media exposure.
I think you can share your link to other social sites.You can also create blogs,write an article or make videos.This is really helpful in advertising.
create a lot of dummy users with a lot of activity... that will increase the probability of new visitors registering and participating...
